Abit NF7Sv2.0 and AMD 3200+ equals NO BOOT

edited February 2005 in Hardware
i just upgraded the cpu from a 1400Mhz AMD to a AMD 3200+ and in the Soft menu it recognized as AMD 2500+ but gave me the choice of 3200+ as well. So i tried the 3200+ and then exit and save. After that everything went bad :bawling: :bawling: ... When i tried to boot up all the fans (CPU fan, GPU Fan were working) it was not responding eventhough the LED in the Mobo that indicates whether it gets electricity was turned on :scratch: . I could not see the first screen that shows the name of the CPU and counts the RAM.. I removed all the RAM and the motherboard did not beep..(all the other times it beeped because there was no RAM installed :confused: ).. All the boots that i have tried are with only the minimal components (CPU/AGP GPU/ HDD/ RAM/mouse&keyboard). Any help...???? Someone told me to flash the CMOS but my pc knowledge is not that vast :rolleyes:;)

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

What kind of RAM do you have? If you were running a 1400, I get the sneaking suspicion you've got not more than crap.

    OK, let's take this slowly.
What is the ram? Both speed and size.
    Put one stick in.
    Clear the CMOS.
    Boot.
See what it defaults to, let it boot there.
Then try to reboot and change settings.

I have 3 dimms of ram. 2x256MB DDR PC3200 (400MHz) and 1x512MB DDR PC3200 (400Mhz).. The last time that i was able to access the bios i tuned the memory to run at 200Mhz. I have to changed any other settings concerning the RAM (CAS,etc..)

I have tried with each Dimm seperately but none works...

    How do i do that?

I have tried taking the battery off and have changed the Cmos jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 for for almost 12 hours but still wont beep with no memory (i have checked that the speaker is connected..)

What brand make is your ram? Is it generic stuff or is it name brand ram?

Can you boot up after clearing the cmos? Have you tried holding down the insert key on the keyboard when you first power up to force a manual speed reset to 100 MHz? Try that and see if you can get it to boot up at a default 100 fsb speed. If so, go into bios and try to set it for the 2500 setting instead of the 3200 setting and see if you can boot up then. Maybe your memory can't run reliably at 200 fsb.

I dont think it will beep with no RAM installed. Do you by any chance have a heatsink that is screwed in to the motherboard? Maybe you didn't use the plastic washers and that's causing a short. Does the old processor work anymore or no? Try switching that back in. Also take everything out of the case and try to turn it on like that. Check the core on the new CPU, does it have any deep scratches, or are any of the edges of it damaged? Put the 1400 back in, try switching back and forth between the 1400 and the 3200 a few times, see if the 1400 works all the time and the 3200 doesn't. You might just have gotten a bad CPU to begin with.

My RAM is generic but i have tried on a friends pc and works fine..

I still cant boot after clearing the Cmos... I havent tried the Ins key...
i will get back when i have tried that..

My heat sink has no screws.. just plug it in and palys... I am afraid to use the old Processor because with the motherboard might still have the settings for the 3200+ and the old one might not be able to cope with these settings (200Mhzx11=2.2Ghz) and fry itself..

There is no other way to get rid of the Cmos apart from the jumper and the battery?

I start to believe that the motherboard chip is fried or something and that i will have to bnuy a new one at the end... :bawling: :bawling:

It won't fry, it'll either not boot or reset itself to the lowest speed cpu, something like 1Ghz. Give it a shot.

Yep, Kanez hit the nail on the head there. When you install the 1400, the mobo will sense the new proc and boot at it's minimum fsb speed so you can set the correct parameters.

I had exactly the same problem. If I set the CPU to 2500 it would work but not boot if set to 3200. It turned out to be incompatable RAM (kingmax) I changed it to some Corsair and everything was fine.

does the board handle a 3200 and if it does is the bios up to date?

The board will handle it no problem. Once I changed the RAM it identified the CPU straight away and there was no more problems with it.

That's what I'm thinking too, bothered. If he sets it to 166 fsb with that 3200+ and it boots (assuming it's not burnt out) but won't run at 200 fsb, then 1 or more sticks of ram can't hack it.
