Pushing the limits

After seeing Thrax's article it made me want to push the limits of my NF7-S because he and I have the same mobo and the same CPU (at least, I think it's the same CPU. 1700+ DLT3C 0310, though mine is XPMW, where his might be different).

Anyway, right now I'm running @ 2.432 (202*12, but it's really 202.7*12). I'm running a VCore of 1.825, but I've not seen it spike higher than 1.808 and I think the lowest I've seen it drop was 1.744. It tends to stay around 1.76-1.78v. I'm running the beta of Prime95 and the Torture test is set to maximum heat. My CPU temp is 54.5 degrees C. It's been running for about 12 minutes, but the temperature hasn't change in probably 8 or 9 minutes.

Is the VCore too high? I don't want to damage the CPU. I want this CPU to last for a long time (3-4 years, preferably longer) and is my temperature too high? I had the VCore set at 1.8, which tended to be around 1.74-1.76v and the computer froze after about twenty mins. If this stays stable for 24 hours do you think it would be fine?

Dont worry A2, you can run a vcore of up to 2 volt without hurting the cpu as far as i know. I haven´t seen a dead tbred because of to high vcore yet and i know several uses as high as 2.2 volt. I have been running 2 volt on my tbred the last 6 months.

Mack: What about the temp? Is that fine or should it be lower?

Temps are fine, but i´m not sure you can get much more speed out of that cpu at those temps. That´s normal temps and well within Amd specs my friend.

Is there a chance to improve those temps with better TIM or better cooler/fan? That will get you more speed if you want.

Run Prime for 24 hours together with a Gromac. No errors within 24 hours? Stable as a rock.

Thanks for the help Mack, unfortunately the system hung again. Oh well, I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I'm @ 2.33 right now, that's a 30MHz overclock than what I was running before so I'll just take what little I can get and be happy. I had wanted to up my F@H production, but oh well. :)

    Again, thanks for the info!

    A2,

Do you have cpu interface enabled or disabled?

I had it enabled and a certain WU hung the pc like a dead duck. Didn´t matter what clockspeed i was using but as as soon as i disabled cpu interface, it all ran smooth again, even at very high clock speed. Something to think of.

What speeds did you reach at default vcore?

    I had it enabled.
I'll see what it does disabled, but right now I'm not overly enthused. Thanks for the advice, though! Appreciate it, Mack!

I don't recall. It runs stable @ 2.3GHz w/ 1.7v, but the board really sends it like 1.67v when set to 1.7v.

    I get 2.3GHz at 1.725 (1.7v actual)

I am getting 2.3 @ 1.6v. I am nervous to push the vcore higher. How high is safe?

Probably 1.85 with no problems. 2.0 is "safe" for the chip, technically. Just watch your temps. Although if you're at 2.3 already I don't see it going much higher...

What is considered a safe temp? Under 60C?

For OCs, I usually consider under 50C "safe." Anything over, and you sometimes start to see stability issues. Of course, I've never overclocked anything as fast as you've already done, so as Levar Burton would say, "You don't have to take my word for it."

Keep going t1. Take it another notch on the vcore. Prolly wont go much higher tho.

Delta T should be kept in mind when mentioning what's safe temp. 50C in regards to what . . . how about maintaining a delta of 20 degrees or less

i think that makes sense..but perhaps the chip has a certain threshold that it cant go over..thats why 50 C is importnat

Now the 1700+ is at 2.4 (14x172) @ 1.7vcore. Load temp is around 50C with room temp of 25C. She has been 100% stable for the last 3 days folding 24/7 with no instability problems.
I would love to go watercooling but I can afford it right now.
