What's on the near horizon in GPU's

I am currently getting ready to possibly buy a vid card for my new DFI SLI-DR and would like to know if and what may be coming in the next few months. If there isn't anything I will likely just go with a 6800GT and possibly get another later. Even if something better comes out and the price of current high end cards drops I would prefer to hold off but it just might be too hard. Also, is a 6800GT worth the extra $120.00 average more cost?

I am looking at the Leadtek "PX6800GT TDH" which is $455.00 plus shipping as the one I would get if I were to buy a card right now.

do you already have the dfi board?
I suppose the near future will bring more multi-gpu cards but idunno.
Those 6800 gt's should be good for quite a while.

You know that once Intel and AMD get dual core worked out then it'll be dual core GPUs. Then there's the issue of HyperTransport on the GPU PCB.

exactly ...multi core gpu's are a given but not in the near future I'm sure.
Something has to happen about the multi core thing. I mean the way it looks now you will have to buy a license for each core which will suck hard. :shakehead

I would stay away from that Leaktek card. Mine died with no warning. Seems it happens fairly frequently with that card.

6800GT is an awesome card. I found the PCI-E models hard to find in Canada though, and most places overpriced them heavily (like $200 more than AGP in some instances). I think a single 6800GT will give you lotsa gpu power for games today and in the future. Plus being able to add another is a real plus. I don't think Nvidia will have too much more coming out in the near future, afaik. So the 6800 series should be current for a while.

I was also looking at the same Leadtek card. A local shop here in Canada had one selling for $449 CDN. Sold out of course. I wound up finding a great deal on an x850XT, and sprung for a single card solution (hopefully a good choice). Card was DOA unfortunatly, so I'm waiting for a replacement.

How do you like your new DFI board mtgoat? I've had my NF4 Ultra-D for a couple of weeks now, and I think it's fantastic.

I got a BFG 6800 Ultra OC from Outpost.com for $499.00 a few weeks ago. Don't see it on the site anymore, but if you have a Frye's Electronics near you, you may want to call them to see if they still have some.

BTW - This card rocks, it does everything the sites said it would. I have Doom 3, Far Cry (1.3 patch) and Half Life 2 on my machine. I can play all three games at their max settings, without a hitch. I've had Far Cry for a while, it's like a whole new game with my new system. D3 & HL2 look absolutely amazing.

My board will be here on Friday. I have the Retail 3000 Winnie as well as the 1GB of TCCD memory here so all I need is a PCI-e GPU. The way I'm looking at it, the 6800GT seems to be the sweet spot as far as bang for the buck.

Is that just personal experience or do you have a source to point to? They actually got quite good reviews and I haven't seen a pattern of problems. I would be interested to know of any.

I see those at the local Fry's all the time. I may just end up buying whatever I get local just to get up and running!:D

After my Leadtek card died I did a search and found several forum users with the same problem. It's impossible to say if your card would do the same, but it was enough evidence to keep me from getting another Leadtek to replace it. I've had good luck with Leadtek in the past and I like the design of that card (it cooled REALLY well and was very quiet, but...

It's up to you. If it goes bad you can always RMA or return it.

I appreciate all the good info and have decided to do something different as usual. I am going to go with a mid level card, preceicely a 6600GT so that I can get 2x 74GB Raptors now. Before deceiding to get a 6800GT I was going to get this MSI 6600GT. Is there something that would be better. I will be upgrading sometime soon so SLI will not be a consideration right now! Thoughts or ideas???

Games like Far Cry, HL2 and KOTOR. I will also be doing a very wide variety in addition to that, so it will be a very mixed bag.

Here is a 13 page review on the gigabyte 3D1 dual 6600 Link

Basicly it seems to run about like a 6800. This article and one I read in Maximum PC said that it will be bundled with a Gigabyte mainboard. Looks like a pretty nice board. Maximum pc said the combo will retail around $600.00

I think you weren't wearing your glasses when you read my next to last post.;) What is happening is that I am going to get 2x 74GB Raptors for my new system instead of a 6800GT. This will basicly leave me with around $225.00 left in the upgrade kitty for a vid card. So I was thinking about getting a 6600GT of some sort to tide me over till say summer when I can get something better. That's where I need new ideas. :)

Woohoo! Thanks, I just set my auction stealer to bid on it. Of course I won't say for now what I set as my highest bid (I get paid tomorrow so can add a little if needed).
