How to speed up the shut down procedure??

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Sorry, but I have a dual processor motherboard.

Lately I've noticed it's taking about 3-5 minutes for the computer to completely reboot or shutdown.

How can I know if this is normal and what can I do to reduce this time consuming shutdown??

Thanks for your advice :)

    If you're using a Logitech keyboard and you have it connected via USB, this may be your problem. iTouch used to have an issue that was never fully resolved. solution: use the PS/2 adapter

    I'm using Windows 2000 Professional as the OS.

    I'm using a Microsoft ergonomic wireless keyboard & wireless mouse connected to a Linksys 2 port KVM switch.

    I once had your problem aswell.

    Check to make sure your computer is clean from spyware, viruses etc and also close programes before you shutdown.

    That's what I did and it helped me and I hope it helps you :)

    you can tweak that os to shut down quicker ...but if it takes 3-5 minutes you might have issues other than the os. That's a long time.

    are you running nortons, hp printer/camera software? those are some huge resource hogs. when windows trys to initiate the shutdown procedure, they are sometimes holding a lot of memory even at idle. takes a bit for the processes to release the memory. see what you have running in processes that is crunching up your memory.

    Well I'm GLAD to say this much for what I run on my computer..
    Antivirus = AVG
    Spyalert = AdAware, Spybot S&D, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, MRUBlaster
    Wireless software(not service) = Boingo (freeware)

    I do have a HP All-In-One installed one the computer but not attached.
    I switch sometimes between my laptop and desktop.

    But what I'm SAD to say is I have seen this huge lag in shut down when none of those processes were running to my knowledge.
    I've gone into Task Manager and closed all running applications but I dont yet feel comfortable trying to close out running processes.

    I personally have thought this long shutdown is due to my dual processors.
    Here'e my other thread I've been running too Motherboard

    If you feel comfortable editing the registry you can try these tweaks and see what happens. You might back up the registry just in case.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000
    "HungAppTimeout"="4000"
    "WaitToKillAppTimeout"="5000"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
    "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="5000"
