SVT Team help required: Adaware and Spybot unable to clean

Hi everyone

My partners laptop seems to have been infected with some weird spyware/malware. Run Adaware and Spybot but it comes back straight away, home page gets changed to a"bout:blank" showing some search site called "Home Search".

Seems to be similar to a post in this forum by tinyfriend on 15/12/04 but some differences in the HJT log.

I am more of a Mac user and never use IE on my PCs so I am totally in the dark with this stuff. Been trying to fix for a while now but going round in circles.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

If there are files that can not be removed by the scans please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

It's been busy around here and lots of other forums lately. Well it looks like your little problem is being difficult. Let's try another fix for you.

1. Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

2. Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.

3. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

4. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

5. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

6. Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

7. Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

8. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

9. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

10. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

11. Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

12. Finally, do an online scan at the following site. Let it remove any infected files found.

I do have one question for you. Did you run Adaware as part of the last fix? If not, please run it this time before you try the online scan.

Hello again

Took a while but finally got everything you said to do done

First, your question re Ad Aware, yep ran that last time too.

The mixture of scans etc. seem to be working well, tried Adware Away since last post too which seemed to fix most of it up, also ran a winsock fix as my connection went haywire even though the hijacking seemed to have stopped.

Your log looks clean to me.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
  1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks a lot for the help Buckeye-Sam, very much appreciated

As I mentioned in my first post I've never had a problem like this before as I'm more of a Mac person and don't use IE on my windows machines so when I first had a look a the problem it was a bit of a novelty to say the least!

On the plus side, over the past couple of days I've done a fair bit of research and have found out a lot from this site and others.

It never fails to amaze me that there are people out there like yourself and your community here that are willing to help out strangers.
