Anyone know of good war games for PC?

edited March 2005 in Gaming
I'm looking for presents for a buddy of mine. He's a pretty hardcore RTS gamer, so he has most stuff that's popular. I'm not really familiar with the genre and I don't know all of what he has. I need either something obscure or something new or coming soon. Anyone know any good RTS war games? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Act Of War: Direct Action comes out in March. Im really looking forward to this one.

Command And Conquer: Generals is rad too, but I am sure if he is the war game buff you say he is, he probably has it.

Rome Total War is cool too.

Not that it's RTS, and it's pretty old.

But BF1942 <- my favorite game of all time.

Is without a single doubt one of the best WWII games ever.

C&C:Generals is his favorite. He has a lot of the popular choices. Act of War looks promising, but I couldn't d/l the demo due to lo spec computer. I found a trailer here:

I think so, I really enjoyed the demo. I showed some friends that are big into war RTS games, and they liked it a lot. Lots of cool weapons and explosions and stuff.

C&C generals is my fav too, but it is getting old. AOWDA looks like a similar game with better graffix. So I will be aquiring it as soon as it is released.

But from what I can tell from the demo, it seems a pretty safe bet.

I felt that the Call of Duty games were also very well done.

I second Rome: Total War. It will blow you away, and I'm amazed it took that many posts for someone to recognize it. Its simply incredible.

I know that he already has Rome:Total War. He says it's amazing. I guess it's time for _me_ to get into RTS games...

I didn't think anyone else played Hearts of Iron :) I like many of the games Paradox puts out because of the history behind them.

Cool, this seems like the best bet due to the timing of the release, as well. Thanks for the help. I am going to try to play the demo on a work computer, see for myself.

I bought Act of War yesterday and basically played non-stop for hours because I was so hooked! Its intense! The storyline is so freakishly realistic! I even drove a tank across the Golden Gate Bridge if thats not cool then I dont know what is! Definately try it though one of the best RTS games in my opinion!!

Is't just me or does that just look like C&C Generals but with a better looking engine?

I think the overall gameplay is better then Generals so are the graphics and storyline! I would definately say this is a better game then Generals which I also love

IMHO Total Annihilation is still the greatest RTS of all time. At some point TA Spring will be available: a replacement engine for Total Annihilation bringing the graphics up to par with a modern RTS.

Yup!! all goofy cutscenes aside, I have a new favorite RTS game. I was up till midnight last night playing this game non-stop. Makes for a rough workday, but Ill make it.

Awsome graphics, nifty explosions, and easy to launch airstrikes. Oh what fun.

If you like Command and conquer Give AOW: DA a try. I guarentee it will not dissapoint.
