edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Hi, I need some pointers and help on how to set up a network to share files between two computers as well as sharing the internet through a dsl connection. Any suggestions on what router to get in particular?

Thanks

easiest way to connect two computers together for file shareing is to make them part of the same "workgroup" this ensures that both computer can communicate with each other.

In XP all you need to do is right click the my computer icon on the desktop,
    choose properties,
    click the Computer Name tab,
    click the CHANGE button
and u can choose what you want your workgroup to be called, i belive by default it is MSHOME

depending on how far the two computers are from eachother and wha kind of security you want is a factor on the router type, u can get a small 4 port D-Link router that basicly just splits the connection but offern no security for pretty cheap. Or you can get a standard LinkSys that allows you alot of advanced features and a built in firewall that works pretty well.

If they are realativly far apart, IE not in the same room and running a cable into the other room wouldnt do, u can opt for the expensive route and get a wireless network

** wireless networks take alot of know-how and a bit of time to lock it down so your neighbors cant get into your network **

just let us know if you have any other questions
