HTML Documents Have No Icon and Other Problems

I’ve encounter the following problem.
Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I really appreciate it.

My HTML and HTM documents are not displaying the proper icons. Instead they show the standard icon Windows show when it doesn't know what program to open the file in. I have Firefox set to default browser and when I click edit; it asks me what application I want to run the file in. This is strange because in internet options I have notepad set as default html editor. If I set IE to default browser, I don’t have the ‘edit’ problem but it still shows the wrong icon. I don’t know what could be causing this. I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot: S&D and they found only tracking cookies. Norton did find something called Trojan.ByteVerify but it said it got rid of it. Here’s my Hijack This log but I think it looks clean. I don’t know this is a virus/adware issue but I'm including the log just in case:

After trying everything I could think of including reassigning the file association, checking folder options... file types, running the repair icons feature of TweakUI, did a sfc /scannow, I even verified there was the correct registry entry in the following location:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}\Old Icon\htmlfile\DefaultIcon

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1"

After all of this I uninstall Firefox and then uninstalled Service Pack 2 and then reinstalled it and none of this helped at all.

Please help me. If there is anymore information I can provide for your just ask and I will be happy to. Thank you so much in advance.

I finally fixed this problem by reinstalling Office XP. I rebooted after the reinstall and everything went back to normal. I can't understand the source of this problem but it might have had something to do with the way that MS Word handles HTML documents that are created within Word itself.

Wow! Thankyou Rewired! I've been at this same problem for two days now. I went round and round the bend w/ trying to fix this problem as well. F-i-n-a-l-l-y I found your post - smacked myself in the forehead and promptly re-installed MSOffice. Viola! The problem went away. Now all my "HTML Document" file types have their icons and newly created htm & html files have the approproiate icons as well.

Thankyou for following up w/ a post re: what you found would resolve the issue. Well Done Rewired.

Rewired sorry nobody got to you on this. Glad you fixed it...I'm curious, did this start after you installed IE7 by any chance? Just seems there have been lots of goofy bugs like this since then, though I don't want to heap blame on it that shouldn't be there.

How 'bout you Pterocarpous? Did you install something that brought it on?

Nope. This happened back in February of 2005. Before the first public beta release of IE7.

After days of research and trial and error, did the following to correct the issues w/ "HTML Document", "Internet Shortcut", & "URL" icons not being displayed or being displayed improperly (wrong version).

    ---

The problem w/ no shortcuts for "HTML Document" file type files was incorrect syntax in a registry data string created by Adobe GoLive install.

    Registry:
    HCR\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}\Old Icon\htmlfile\DefaultIcon\"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe GoLive CS2\GoLiveIcons.dll",-2

The proper syntax contains no quote marks. The Adobe GoLive icons appeared properly for file type "HTML Document" when the quote marks were removed from this data string.

In FILE TYPES configuration for "HTML Document" file types, I selected the corresponding Adobe GoLive icon from: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe GoLive CS2\GoLiveIcons.dll

    ---

The 2nd problem was IE7 "Internet Shortcut" & "URL" file types' icons were showing up as old IE6 version icons. After much troubleshooting, trial & error, finally resorted to copying the %SystemRoot%\system32\url.dll file to [same path]\url2.dll. Then, changed all data field references in the registry from \url.dll to \url2.dll. Finally, changed the icon choice in FILE TYPES configuration for "Internet Shortcut" file type from %SystemRoot%\system32\url.dll to [same path]\url2.dll.

Issue w/ IE version of "Internet Shortcut" & "URL" icons was corrected.

NOTE: This is just a work-around rather than a permanent fix. This process will likely have to be repeated if the default browser is switched to Mozilla Firefox then back to IE.

    ---

    SUMMARY:
(This applied to XPPRO & XPMCE builds running IE7):

    Copied c:\windows\system32\url.dll -->[same path]\url2.dll
Changed all data field references in registry
    From: \url.dll
    To: \url2.dll

Changed Data string for registry entry:
    HCR\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}\Old Icon\htmlfile\DefaultIcon\
    From: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe GoLive CS2\GoLiveIcons.dll",-2
    To: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe GoLive CS2\GoLiveIcons.dll,-2

Changed "HTML Document" file type icon to corresponding icon in:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe GoLive CS2\GoLiveIcons.dll

Changed "Internet Shortcut" file type icon to corresponding icon in:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\url2.dll

Hope this is helpful to anyone else tangling w/ the same or similar issues.

Why thank-e-sai. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Stumbled across this site in a quest for a resolution to the HTML Document type icons issue. Over the years have spent a lot of time in forums like Experts Exchange. I like the feel of this forum. Seems friendly which is nice. My interest is piqued now. I'll explore the site and posts some more. Thank ya'll for the welcome and feedback.
