Computer runs about 30 sec.

Hey Guys,

Very nice site you have here, like a lot of people with a computer problem I started researching solutions on the web and came across this site, I was impressed by some of the threads and tried a few things for the problem I am having but no luck yet. I hope someone can help me out.

I have a computer that I put together about 4 months ago and it just quit 2 days ago. Most of the components are newer and have been working fine until this thing just died. I have a AMD 64 bit processor, attached to a Asus K8N motherboard, a gig of ram, run of the mill video card and creative labs sound card. As a un-experienced computer guy I made about every mistake you could make putting to this thing together but I got it working and it seemed fine.

So the computer dies and won’t restart, I have a led on the motherboard telling me I have power but I figure it could still be the power supply so I go out and get a new Antec 400 watt power supply (I had been wanting to get one anyway) and still nothing, took everything apart, cleaned and checked every connection, reset the CMOS, removed the battery and still no luck.

Then I removed all cards again along with the memory, unplugged all the drives and tried again, this time the computer would run for 29 seconds and then quit, I hooked my video card back up to hook up my monitor but I don’t get any response at all.

I can reset the power switch off the power supply and power the computer up again for about 30 sec’s and then its shuts off. The processor is a socket 754 and I don’t have any spare processor’s that I can pop in there, I also don’t have another motherboard I can test the processor on, and ideas on how I can figure out which on is messed up (or if it could be anything else)?

Thanks for your help…

Cpu could be dead :( always sucks when u get a defective one or it could be the board.

I recomend Rma'ing both of them just to be sure :) .

with out the processor the whole computer would do absolutly nothing, the fans might spin but the computer would be totally non responsive.

does the system make any beeps when u take the video card / ram out of it and try starting it? with out RAM in the machine it should give you a series of beep codes, that is if the processor is still good. it should do the same thing with the video card.

so you say that with out the ram or any expansion cards the machine runs for about 30 seconds then cuts off? it sounds like the mobo or the proc, perhps both.

Thanks the reply Armo, i did try and power up the board with out the processer just to see if it would keep running, same result as before...about 30 secs and it just shuts off...hooked up a speaker and no beeps at all (with proccesser back in).

Hooked the main HD cable back up just to see what would happen...the power ran for about 3 sec and just shut down...

I'm gonna figure the board must be messed up...

one other thing to try is to take the mobo off of the chasis and try running it on a peice of cardboard, it may sound bizzare, but the board might be shorting out somewhare, although all cases ive seen of a short made the system turn off after less than a second, its still worth a shot.

if you dont hear any beeps from the machine trying to post it is most likley the processor

I took out the board and ran it on some carboard,(thanks for the suggestion) same results after 30 secs....i have some other parts laying around and tried to configure the same set up..just a board with a 1500 amd, i powered it up to see what would happen...i just runs until i shut it off...not that the procceser is working or not..just that it won't shut off...
