6800 unlocking pipes and overclocking

Hello all, I just picked up a plain msi 6800 for 200.00. The card is fast scoring over 10k in 3dmarks 2003. I used Riviatuner to unlock the pipes.

However I'm having a problem overclocking the card after I unlock the pipes. Even if I overclock it by just 1mghz the driver says it's failed and reverts it back to defaults. THere have been a few times that it would let me overclock it pipes unlocked.

With pipes locked I can overclock the core to 419 and mem to 820ish... Is there something I'm missing. Temps are good just don't understand why it will not let me over clock it pipes unlocked.

Any advice would be most apprciated...

Those pipes where there from the beginning and was removed cause they failed the test at the factory. Sometimes we have luck and get a good card, sometimes not.

However, usually, all it needs is a little voltage mod and it should perform great.
Have you checked if there are any bioses that you can use? I know some of the bioses have a higher vgpu and a higher vgmem. Might be worth looking in to.

Yeah, I have a 6800 with pipes unlocked, but its a Gainward Golden Sample and those generally are supposed to have slightly higher quality components on them, or so they say. It works fine for me except it just doesn't like running some of the tests in 3dMark05 with the pipes unlocked. Works fine for gaming and such and it does allow me to overclock also, just not to the extreme. I don't see the severe problems you have though. You may have just been unlucky and gotten bad pipes.

Oh yeah, there is an option in RivaTuner that allows you to trick the card into thinking its a 6800 Ultra. I think I saw some improvements in some areas and more crashes in other areas when I did it, but I can't remember, I've lost the sheet I wrote all my test results on.

Komete, I had the same problem with mine except not so servere' I could overclock a bit more with the pipes unlocked but not a lot.

    See this thread

The thing that cured it for me was to flash the bios with a modified one that raised the vcore to 1.5v (which is standard for the 6800u) from the standard 1.2v (for the 6800nu). It also makes the standard clocks 350/875 if I remember rightly (you can use Nibitor to change that though before flashing). You also need to make sure you have fairly good cooling though, I fitted an artic cooling NV5 on it which was fine.

After I had flashed it i could clock the card to 430 core & 890 mem unlocked.

If you feel like trying this out I can email you the modded bios to flash it with but make sure you back up the original one first & I accept no responsibility yadda yadda yadda .... etc :)

    Hi Mack,

Mine is agp & I got it for £170 inc vat from lowestonweb.co.uk

    Lowestonweb - 6800nu

It says its oem but it is in fact a Leadtek branded 6800nu that comes with all the bits in a brown box.

For the money I paid & the fact that it unlocked & overclocked so well I think I got a bargain.

I haven't flashed mine to a new bios as of yet, I've just stuck with the stock Gainward stuff since they mean to OC it...

    /me loads up Rivatuner

Ok in Main you should have a pulldown that says NVidia GeForce 6800/Monitor. Just below that you have where it tells you 256 bit NV40. Click on the little triangle in the lower right corner, and then on low level system settings (The card pic).

In that screen go to the NVStrap driver and then in the PCI Device ID settings switch it from determined by hardware to custom. This pulls up a new menu that will let you choose between Ultras, LEs, Regulars, Quadros etc. I'm not sure what changing this does, but it may unlock something in the driver specific to those cards, and that might cause better performance in the pipelines. I don't think it ever really worked for me, but its worth a shot.

Haven't run 3d05 on my card yet but in 03 I can bench around 12500.

With regards to the bios setting, I presume your talking about your motherboard bios? If so that doesn't control how much voltage is sent to the gpu core. Its the video card bios that controls that.

By switching that tap over in rivia I was able to bump it up to 420 core and 900 mem but only with the pipes locked... Think I'll have to look into a bios..

You might also want to edit your post so you don't get spammed.
