CPU p4 2.4C voltage

edited February 2005 in Hardware
Hi, I have p4 2.4c with a asus p4p800SE, and I manually set the voltage to the default at 1.525V in the bios, but when i run cpuid, the voltage say it's 1.6. what may be the problem? the case i have is the Antec sx1040.

Anything below 2V is fine as long as ur temps arnt peaking above 70C

Grayfox, you are dead wrong about that voltage (2.0v) on a 2.4C Northwood. If it's run that high even with phase change or peltier cooling for any length of time, you stand a good chance of suffering Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome fairly quickly. :shakehead

biruru, 1.6v won't kill it unless you have absolutly crappy cooling but why set it manually in bios if you want to run it at it's stock vcore. Set it to run on the auto setting and see what vcore you read then. If it's still that high and you want to get it lower, then set it maually lower than 1.525v. Some motherboards overvolt and others will undervolt a bit over the settings in bios. My IC7-G undervolts a bit over what I've actually set it at in bios.

Hey mudd, what IS the ceiling before SNDS? Mine is at 1.68 right now... I believe either 1.7 or 1.75 is the limit, right?

Yeah, I wouldn't push a Northie past 1.7v even on high end air or 1.75v on water for any length of time. Both heat and voltage seem to be involved with SNDS. Too bad the Northies didn't turn out to be as forgiving as the Tualatin P3's and Celerons; they will put up with remarkable amounts of vcore without hurting them.

I thought Northies were much improved & SNDS was a thing of the past with them. The other thing I'd add is my 2.4C hates volts, it o/c's higher on volts below 2.6v.

Gah. Why did I try that? I knew mine wouldn't do 3.2 (from 2.8) on default voltage, or anything less than 1.68. But I tried it anyway. Wouldn't load Windows. Then I tried default (1.525). Stupid. My BIOS crapped or something. 4 or 5 reboots and nothing. Total power down for a few minutes and it goes. Luckily. Thought I fried my board :(
