Windows REPAIR Utility - HELP!!!

edited February 2005 in Hardware
My system has been hanging a bit and I had to resort to a few "hard" boots. In doing this I must have hosed my system files. I get a message during bootup that says the system file is messed up and to run "repair" from the original XP disk.

When I do this and press "R" during windows setup, it just sends me to a DOS prompt at C:\Windows. I didn't see any commands to do a repair. WHAT DO I DO NOW?!

Can I just do an install "over-the-top" of the old windows, or do I risk losing everything? Can this even be done without re-formatting in XP?

Naturally I haven't been running system restore and I just finished doing my taxes on this machine!

You go to the portion of the install where it scans for an existing copy of windows. When it finds one then you do the repair install.

you're in the recovery console. Tell windows to install, not to use the recovery console. After you do that, you can get to the repair install.

Okay, I didn't do the first "R", I went into setup, past the F8 license OK and selected my partition. I still don't see a "repair" option, only an install with or without format. I selected without format. The next screen warns that the old install will be deleted, including all setting, applications, destop, my documents folder, etc. and to select "L" to delete old install! Is there still another screen after this to pick "Repair"?

Will all my old apps still be there, or will I need to re-install everything?
