AIM Beach Pics - Please help - bohemiabri

Hi. I'm new to this and would really appreciate any help with this problem.

Our computer was infected with the AIM Beach Pics virus. I've run AdAware, Spybot, followed the steps in the updated removal guide for the bestfriends.scr virus/adware (none of the files were found), tried several other things posted about this problem (downloaded and ran www.jayloden.com/AIMFix.exe, scanned withwww.pandasoftware.com),
but still have issues.

Some things I noticed:

Can not activate a new installation of Norton Systemworks, although when I tried in Safe mode, I was able to get close (it hung up on the Activation screen).

Must click twice on things that normally only need one click.

Task manager would close immediately after opening.

MSN would not work properly but Nescape seems to.

Hello, I'm back again without good news.

I downoladed and ran the latest version of AIMFix. It did not report any viruses found. I then ran the two other things posted on the Jayloden website for this problem: ZoneFix and WinsockXPFix.

Still can't activate Norton Systemworks Premier (I installed it, but the activation window is incomplete on my screen and it will not work). FYI - when I start up in Safe mode, the Systemworks program window appears correctly, but then the computer gets hung up on the Activation screen.

I installed another program yesterday (Printmaster) and it, too, would not go through the on-line registration.

Thanks so much for your time. Any thoughts?

Run Hijackthis, go to Misc Tools -> Open hosts file manager -> Open in notepad. Copy that text and paste it into your next post here.

Also post a new hijackthis log.

I'll be updating my Bestfriends/Beach pics guide with the EXE you end up with as well. Beach Pics is the exact same thing as Bestfriends, only with a new name.

Also, when you post a new log, please use the latest version of Hijack This (version 1.99.1).

Hi - still no luck for me. I ran Hickackthis using the 1.99.1 version and posted the new log. I also used your latest removal guide to look for the files you have listed but did not find any of them. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you so much for your time!

Just a couple things I want to check: Does Task Manager still close the instant you open it? Is it still hijacking your away message?

I ask because your log dosn't show anything that looks like the virus at all...

You're right. Task manager now works and away messages are not being hijacked. The only manifestation of a problem as far as I can tell is that whereas before I got the virus I never had a problem loading new software, now the three I tried to load (Norton Systemworks, McAfee Internet Security Suite and Printmaster) gave me problems. Only part of Norton works (WinDoctor and some others, but not AntiVirus and Utilities), McAfee would not load, and both Norton & Printmaster would not register (or on the case of Norton, activate and register). One final thing, when I tried running Norton in Safe mode, the opening window that looked and was incomplete in standard operating mode was now complete and I could go a few steps in the registration/activation process before it locked.

I've been in contact with Norton, but so far that has not helped. Thank you so much for your help.

Try reinstalling Systemworks.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent



Delete temp files

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.




Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.
