We've just received the first images of the 512MB variant of ATI's Radeon X850 board - Nothing too exciting if you've seen a lot of 256MB Radeon X850s, but here they are nonetheless.
Feel free not to get overly excited...

I really don't think an extra 256mb of memory on the card will give it much of a performance boost. This will likely be another repeat of the 128 vs 256mb radeon 9800s. For the most part (with the exception of the very latest games) 256mb radeon 9800s had little to no performance gain, and in some cases, the extra memory decreased the performance.

I own a 256mb X850XT, and it is a killer card. At $599 cdn, it was reasonably priced against the competition as well, but that DDR3 is not cheap, and chances are it will make the card 50-60% more expensive (possibly more) for what could very well be a 5% performance improvement in some games.. $1K cdn for a card like that seems like a waste.

Gainward is coming out with a 512MB version of the 6800 Ultra, so I believe nVidia has the "wayyy too much memory" base covered too.
