Printer goes Inactive after Power Off/ON

edited February 2005 in Hardware
My printer likes to jam and to clear it, I have to power off and on. Usually when I do this and try to print again, the system say the document failed to print. Device Manager says all is working fine, but I have to re-boot to get the printer to work. Why is this? Can't I get the printer re-initialized without re-booting which is a real pain.

I noticed I'm running the printer with no interrupt assigned to save resources. Could this be the problem? I'm running XP Pro SP2 and an HP OfficeJet off the printer port, not USB (Printer too old!)

    Rustynuts,

Why do you have to power off to clear the jam? The second you open the cover on the printer, it comes to a halt anyway since it have a sensor at the door/latch.
Are you using XP's native drivers or something else? It might be worth a try with other drivers. The printerport probably can't see that the printer is powered off and therefore gives you that message.

It's a function of the printer. It won't reset itself without a power off! I belive I'm using the generic XP drivers. I might try HP to see if they have any old drivers. I think my printer pre-dates XP and I don't think the drivers were ever updated/certified.

I just verified, HP only has specific drivers up to Win2000, nothing specific for XP
