Sharp Sounds Coming from the case

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Hi all, recently I just notice a sharp sound that last about 3-5 sec, after I turn on the computer, and then it's gone. I want to know where is the sound coming from and what is wrong, anyway or idea on how to find out? It's a newly build computer, p4 2.4c, asus p4p800SE, ANTEC sx1040BX case, ati 9800 pro 128.

Thanks, much appreciated :)

Could you describe it? Does it sound like a beep or something electronic, or is it something mechanical like a grinding noise?

It doesn't sound as loud as the system beep, it sounds somewhat lighter but you can still hear it, first I thought it was the speedstream model but then i turn it off, and I still hear it from the case.

So it's sort of a high pitched whine that fades away after a few seconds?

Have you tried to take the side of the case off to kind of locate where it is coming from? Maybe case fan or something?

Okay, that is a capacitor that is about to blow. Now, whether to say it's from the motherboard, video card, or power supply is a whole different matter.

I had a motherboard that did that for over a year before it went. But that sound is definitely the sound of impending doom for one of your system components.

Most likely is the PSU - they are the most prone to failure. However, do you have a video card you can swap out with another one to see if it is the video card? Just to eliminate it as a possibility.
