vits5 needs serious help w/spyware?

Problem: I think I've been hijacked. My PC, with no assistance from me, directs itself to connect to hosts of its choosing. Doesn't matter what I'm doing on the PC, it just connects to various Internet sites.

What I've done so far: (1) Ran CWShredder (2) Ran Spybot (finds the problems - appears to fix - but they keep coming back) (3) Ran AdAware and also ran HijackThis (log below). In the Hijack log, I saw the "redirected host sites and tried to delete. Appeared to delete, but came back. (By the way, ever since running these programs, now when I reboot, I'm getting "RUNDLL" errors. Can you assist with this too?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated as I have run the above mentioned programs many, many times with little or no success.

Should you choose to accept this assignment, please be patient as I'm an everyday user and really need layman's instructions.

    You've got a bad VX2 infection and it takes a special tool to get rid of it. But first we need to repair your connection and have you download the current version of hijackthis.

    Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip and run it.

    Check the I know what I'm doing box.

    In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of the following files.

    dolsp.dll

    Select every instance of this file, but no others, and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.

    When you are done click Finish>>.



    You are using an outdated version of Hijackthis.
    Please download the current version of Hijackthis and post a new hijackthis log.

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    HELP! Per your instructions, just ran l2mfix.bat and chose option1. The screen has a message on it:
    C:\windows\systems32\cmd.exe
    c:\windows\systems32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
    MS-DOS and MS Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate application. My choices are 'close' or 'ignore'. What should I choose?

    Follow-up question to the error message while running l2mfix.bat:

    I see that the menu in the batch program has a selection #5 (Fix autoexec.nt/cmd.exe error). Should I 'close' the screen and choose #5 to correct
    the error message, or should I just be quiet and stop second guessing? Oh, I do hope you get on-line soon! Thanks a million times!

    You did good! That's the log I needed to see. Now here's the next step.

    Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

    From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Download the attached file(fix.zip) and extract fix.reg to your desktop. Save it there, but don't run it yet.

    Close HijackThis and open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
    Highlight this file and select: End Task

    desktop.exe

    Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode


    Click Start -> Run (type and click Ok for each of the following: (if exists)

    regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\sysupd.dll
    regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll
    regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\msdbhk.dll


    Next:

    Locate fix.reg on your desktop. Right-click and select: Merge (Ok the prompt)

    Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes) [required step]
    Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

    Open Windows Explorer to your Windows\Temp folder [required step]
    Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

    Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following: (if exists)

    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\sysupd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\msdbhk.dll

    After the above, reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log ...

    Hi,
    I need a clarification on your instructions. Here' s what I did and what I can't do.
    1. Downloaded & extracted fix.zip to desktop; (2) Ran HJ and placed checks and ran fix on files you named; (3) Went into Task Mgr, but 'desktop.exe WAS NOT running and wasn't there; (4) Rebooted in safe mode; (5) From the 'Run' line, typed in the names you gave me. The first two (sysupd.dll & mfiltis.dll) succeeded, but the last (msdbhk.dll) gave me this message: "was loaded, but the Dllunregister server entry point was not found. File cannot be registered". AND, THIS IS WHERE I NEED CLARIFICATION...(6) I'm still in safe mode (logged in as Administrator), and 'fix.reg' is not on my desktop ( only appears in normal mode). Do you want me to reboot normally and continue with your directions, or is there a way of being in safe mode and getting the fix.reg to my desktop while in this mode? :scratch:

    Click Start -> Search. Select All files and folder and search for fix.reg If it comes up you should be to access right from the search results. If it doesn't come up just reboot back into normal mode and access it there.

    Hi,
    Don't want to say this too loud, but I think you've done it! :D I don't see those files anymore, the redirecting of web sites has stopped, the pop up search box has disappeared. I am posting an updated HJ log for your review. So let me know. AND.. couple of questions: (1) I backed up my data files before we began this adventure. Are they infected, or is this a 'system' problem? (2) I'm using Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper, Spybot and McAfee Antivirus. Is there anything else I should be using to keep me safe from this kind of problem?

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

    The backup CD's that I made of my data files prior to your intervention - will they be affected by what happened, or will they be ok?
