Need help getting rid of enjoywebsurf - New member

I believe my computer has been hijacked. When I open Internet explorer I get this search web page from enjoywebsurf instead of my normal homepage. I did a google search on this phrase and found a previous discussion here at shortmedia from jrhammond on 2-25-2005, 01:50pm titled "about:blank homepage and "only the best" popups". you gave him instructions to follow to remove the HSA from his computer. I followed those steps to step 8 Scan with HijackThis but had to stop there because my log was not the same and I didn't want to remove files I needed. Also I should note that on step 6 running services.msc you instructed to scroll down to "Workstation Netlog Service" but when I did this step I only found a listing for Workstations without the words Netlogon Service. I tried to follow the instructions anyway and was able to change the start up type to disabled and click the stop button. I hope this was correct. When I got to step 8 I did not check any of the items to fix because they were not the same as the other posters log. I went back and reset step 5 about showing hidden files and step 6 changing the start up back to automatic where they were set before.

    I'll be able to tell when your log is clean and give you the all clear. But right now you still have your HSA infection.

    Please follow these steps to remove the HSA from your computer.

    Step 1
    Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
    Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.


    Step 2
    Download Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.


    Step 3
    Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.


    Step 4
    Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files.
    Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"


    Step 5
    Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

    Scroll down and find the service called Network Security Service. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


    Step 6
    Reboot to Safe Mode
    Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.


    Step 7
    Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    Step 8
    Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.


    Step 9
    Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.


    Step 10
    Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin


    Step 11
    Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.


    Step 12
    Finally, do an online scan at one of the following sites. Let it remove any infected files found.

    Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

    Day 4 Things are getting worse. Can no longer open windows explorer, my documents, control panel, etc unless in safe mode. I can restart and click on my dsl provider connection and browse the web in normal mode but cannot get into drive files. I had to go into safemode to open the folder to run Hijack This.
    I followed your latest 12 steps. Some of the items you told me to check in step 7 were either no longer there or were somewhat changed. I was able to check R3. 02, and the first 04 addqj.exe. from your instructions on Hijack This. The rest were no longer showing.

    I will also note that while waiting for your most recent response I checked the windows update site and found 14 suggested updates whick I installed. Now I have problems getting into my computer files. Don't know if it is from the windows updates or from this virus/spyware problem. Someone throw me a lifevest please. I need and appreciate your help more than I can express. Thank you.

    Reports:


    Adaware scan showed possible browder hijack attempt on a number of items that have the same names as the porn websites that are showing up in my favorites folder.

    I was unable to print the about buster report but the report said

    Generally it's not a good idea to install Windows updates when you are infected. It's best to remove spyware and viruses first and then install. But nothing we can do about that now.

    Is your Norton antivirus updated?

    I was reading a thread about the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger Error because I have that popping up now too. It may be related to the load of updates I installed which included the XP Service Pack 2. I just thought it was safe to install the updates that Windows recommended. In that thread people were having the same problem that this postmortem error keeps showing up and they can't open any of their computer files. They can however go online and surf the web. I have the same symptoms on top of my problems here with this web surf hijack. I don't know if they are related or two seperate issues. Someone said the postmortem error was a beast of a virus and recommended using Killbox and HijackThis to get rid of it.

    My head is swimming. I have been running Norton antivirus and security scans, Adaware, Spybot, AboutBuster, Spy Sweeper, Panda Active Scan, and SpywareBlaster, Restarting, safe mode, normal mode, checking boxes, and I feel nowhere closer to an end to this mess. By all means, I appreciate your time and help. I have not contacted anyone else about my problem. I am very grateful for anything you can suggest to get this computer clean. Sorry if I complicated the issue.

    This is a new day and a hopeful one. I ran the scans again that you recommended and a number of others this morning. Spybot, SpySweeper, AdAware SE, AboutBuster, Spyware Blaster. I ran a HiJackThis and reviewed it again for the items you told me to check for fixing in your previous post. I checked 3 that were still there even though i had checked them for fixing yesterday. I just restarted in normal mode and ran HiJackThis. Here is the log.     :celebrate :celebrate Added a few spyware programs. I'm loaded for bear now. One question, I'm assuming that I need to go back to the original 12 steps and reset some items I changed. Like going back to folder options and uncheck show hidden files and check hide protected files, since we changed them for this process. Also that change we did in start/run/services.msc, should i put the startup type back to automatic since earlier we disabled it, or just hit the start button or do nothing. Is there anything else that we changed during this healing that would need to be put back to the original setting?

    You can reset the setting to hide hidden files if you want, but it's not absolutely necessary. The service that you disabled was part of the malware and was removed, so nothing to do there.

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
