Fujitsu Says Carbon Nanotubes Will Replace Copper In Chips

edited March 2005 in Science & Tech
Fujitsu says that by the turn of the decade copper wires in semiconductors will be too thin to efficiently transmit electrons, making their usage unfeasible in high performance chips beyond the next 5 years. The Japanese semiconductor maker says it believes that carbon nanotubes offer a compelling alternative to copper wires in chips, citing their 1000-fold improvement in current density and overwhelming advantage in electron mobility.
Fujitsu says it plans to introduce carbon nanotubes in its 45 nm process technology, and should be fully committed to the methodology by its 32 nm process introduction.
