about:blank - recurring nightmare

Hi everyone

My homepage keeps changing to about:blank, pop-ups are appearing a lot and the whole net experience is very slow. Some web sites I can't even get to (like hotmail), i am redirected to about:blank. I've scanned using updated versions of Adaware and Spybot. They deleted some things, but the wretched homepage remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.


Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode


Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".


Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BOPGHA.DLL


Delete everything within this folder, but not the folder itself.

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP


Run a full scan with Adaware.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Thanks for your help. PC was running fine until I deleted those las three entries, then we saw our first pop up in ages and, lo and behold, about:blank is back as our homepage.

Download this file from Symantec

Now, disconnenct the internet and then run the tool. Once the tool has been launched, a message like this should appear:

"Please do NOT start any other applications until the removal tool exits and the computer is restarted"

Click OK on it. Click 'Start' and the removal proccess will be started. Once it has finished (you should be told it has been finished) reboot/restart the computer.

Please do not launch Internet Explorer or Connect to the internet until the end of this proccess!
Once back into Windows, re-run the tool to make sure you are clean. After that, Run HijackThis again, close all open windows, put a checkmark next to the following, and press "Fix Checked":

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode


Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".


Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AJBLE.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SE.DLL


Reboot back to normal mode. Now let's see if it's still there.

Download StartDreck from this link.

1. Once it is downloaded, extract the file into c:\startdreck.

2. Navigate to c:\startdreck and double-click on Startdreck.exe

3. When the program opens click on the Config button.

4. Then click on the unmark all button.

5. Then put checkmarks in the following checkboxes:

* Under Registry put a checkmark in the Run Keys checkbox.

* Under System/Drivers put a check in the Running Proccess checkbox.

6. Press the OK button.

7. Copy the text that appears and post it here.

There is still a bad file present that we need to remove. Until it is gone you are still infected.

1. Reboot your computer, and press F8 when Windows is starting. When you come to the menu, select to boot into the safe command prompt mode.

2. At the DOS prompt type the following (There is a space between del and c:\):

del C:\WINDOWS\WMSETEP.LOG


3. Download the attached file and extract it to your desktop. Now double-click on the showhiddenreg.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes or OK button.

4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

5. Run CWshredder(that you downloaded earlier) and click on the Fix button.

6. Close all windows except for hijackthis, and start HijackThis again and fix the following entries:


O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SE.DLL,DllInstall


7. Click on start, then run, and type Cleanmgr and have it remove all Temp, Temporary Internet, and Recycle Bin files.

8. Reboot your system back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks for your help. Apologies if I have misread your instructions, but I think I hit a snag regarding steps 1 and 2. I went into safe mode, clicked on start, programs , accessories then MS DOS prompt then I typed del C:\WINDOWS\WMSWTEP.LOG. The phrase "Access Denied" appeared. Have I done everything properly?

Ok, here's an updated fix. Let me know if you run into any trouble.

1. Reboot your computer, and press F8 when Windows is starting. When you come to the menu, select to boot into the safe command prompt mode.

2. At the DOS prompt type the following and hit enter after each.

attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\WMSETEP.LOG

ren WMSETEP.LOG WMSETEP.BAD

3. Download the attached file(from my previous post) and extract it to your desktop. Now double-click on the showfile.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes or OK button.

4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

5. Run CWshredder(that you downloaded earlier) and click on the Fix button.

6. Close all windows except for hijackthis, and start HijackThis again and fix the following entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

7. Click on start, then run, and type Cleanmgr and have it remove all Temp, Temporary Internet, and Recycle Bin files.

8. Reboot your system back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

I got the message “Sharing violation reading drive C”

I got “duplicate file name or file in use”

Step 6. The entry: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SE.DLL,DllInstall was not listed.

Step 7. The file C:\WINDOWS\WMSETEP.BAD wasn’t present.

I tried to restart into MS-DOS mode, but the only options available after START, SHUTDOWN are shutdown, restart, standby and hibernate.

We're going to have to try something a little different for you.

Go to Add/Remove programs and click on the third tab, "Make a Recovery disc" (something like that). Make a disc and then re-boot with the disc in. It should give you the option of starting without CD Rom support, which you should choose. At this point, it should come up with the A:\ prompt which you can then turn to C:\

Type the following commands, hitting enter after each one.

cd c:\windows

attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\WMSETEP.LOG

del WMSETEP.LOG

exit


I'm crossing my fingers for you. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the help so far. After I followed your last set of instructions; upon rebooting a message box told me that the WMSETEP.LOG file was missing, so I think it's worked...but my homepage still sets itself to about:blank.

That is a good sign. There is a new tool that's become available that is supposed to remove this infection. Download it from here.

Just follow the prompts when you run it. It should ask you for a reboot and then tell you if it's been removed.


Post a new hijackthis log after you've run it and we'll clean up the remnants if there are any.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

Looks like you have fixed my problem. Thanks a million! Just one more thing, on Internet Explorer when I click on Tools, Internet Options, General...under the heading Homepage, if I click on Use Blank for my homepage it automatically changes to the about:blank homepage. Obviously I will never do this, but is there some remnant of the adware on the browser? Thanks in advance.

About Blank is actually the default setting for IE when you don't have an assigned home page set up. It's not malicious in any way. It's only a sign of something bad when you can't change it.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
         
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
         
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
