printer and speaker problems

edited March 2005 in Science & Tech
I was given a computer and everything is good except when I when to install a new printer. It is running windows 98se and it is compatible but the computer does not recognize the printer. It says USB port not detected. Also I can't seem to get the speakers to work. I believe the system has a sound card and they apparently were working before I got them. I've been doing alot of web research and the term bios comes up alot for both problems. Is there a download or two that could help me. Trying in TO. God Bless America.

Give us as much info as you can about the computer. Especially:

    Brand and Model# of computer
    Brand and Model# of Motherboard
Brand and Model# of Sound Card
    Brand and Model# of Printer

You might look in Device Manager and list anything that has a red "X" or yellow "!" next to it. :)

It sounds like you are missing the drivers for the usb ports.

Okay. There where no red x's or yellow !'s. The system reads as 3D Micro computer IPC Genuine Intel X86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 248.0MB Ram. Listed under sound I found CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio (and Legacy) Device. The printer I am trying to install is a Lexmark Z615 (brand new). If I am missing anything could you please tell me how to find it? Thanks. Still trying, Tina. :bawling:

Do you know how to get them. Do I go to the manufacturer of the printer?

You can check intel's website and if not there then try microsoft's site for the drivers. You may also check with lexmark's site. There should have been a disc with the drivers for that printer. You are running 98 and not XP. 98 does not automatically recognize things w/out having the drivers previously installed. You may just need the drivers for the printer. Try that first.

The C-Media Sound Driver is available at the link.

For the USB problem, look through this page for the "Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility", then download and run the program. That will tell you what chipset your Motherboard uses. Then find the corresponding USB driver for your chipset. If you need more help, just ask. :)

Since your printer is brand new, it no doubt came with installation discs. Once you have the USB problem straightened out (allowing Windows to see the device) just follow Lexmark's instructions to finish the job.
