Half-Life 2 video errors

Since I reformatted almost a week ago, HL2 won't run fullscreen. Running the game the first time goes through the Valve intro, then produces this error, saying it will go to default video settings.

Hit OK and start the game, runs through the intro again and fails. Again. :banghead:
This error says it will go into safe mode.

Alas, it works! BUT IT'S IN A WINDOW! :banghead:

Any ideas on what could be wrong here? HL2 worked fine before I formatted, even when I added some ram, nothing gave me any problems. Nothing hardware-related has changed since then. The only thing I can think of that has changed is that I'm now running 5.2 Cats.

Tried reinstalling the 5.2's, and when that didn't work I installed the 5.1's. Still the same thing. :(

Try deleting the autoexec.cfg file. (There might be one other .cfg file to delete, but I'm not sure...although you should be able to delete pretty much any of them without hurting anything). Once deleted, run HL2, and it SHOULD generate a new one, and in the process...fix your problem.
If THAT doesn't work, then you MIGHT have to re-install HL2 (I know it sucks if you got it off the internet), but hopefully your problem will be fixed.

I'm at work right now, but it's under the CSSource folder or something like that...like...SteamApps\CSSource\configs or something...

It should stick out like a sore thumb though...you won't break anything, especially since it's already broken, lol. Almost ALL games are pretty resillient to having their .cfg files taken out from under them.

I can't find it. I let windows search all of Program Files\Valve for it, but it turned up nothing. I'm gonna go ahead and reinstall and hope it works. :-/

    Blegh...alrighty...
Did you try to search your entire machine for *.cfg at least?
I'd HATE to see you spend all that time and energy to reinstall it...

Yeah, tried that too, nothing. I finished reinstalling and... no luck.

    So far I've tried:
    Rebooting a few times
    reinstalling 5.2 Cats
    using 5.1 Cats
    reinstalling HL2

    in that order.

Anything else, or must I live with this window?

    Well crap.
    Okay, okay...how about this:
    Uninstall the game.
    Uninstall STEAM.
Delete the ENTIRE valve directory, to make sure you kill everything that the uninstaller might've missed...
    THEN reinstall it.

I'm fixing to go search some other forums for you to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Fear not! We shall figure this out...

Hey, I gotta fix for you:
    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=255287&highlight=fullscreen+windowed

It talks about how you need to manually set your refresh rate in the command line. Easy stuff. Let me know if it works.

Haha sweet! I had the exact same problem as the other guy did forcing refresh rates. I only needed -freq 120 until I changed the res from 640x480 to 1024x768. Now I don't need it anymore. That fixed my problem. Thanks a lot! :D

Thanks to GrayFox as well for trying to help!
