Windows' Shortcuts

Howdy folks.

My question today is about Windows' Shortcuts. In the properties window (found by right clicking a shortcut and clicking 'Properties') there is a text box that reads 'Start In:'. It's somewhat self explanatory but my question is, what is this used for? Does it really matter? Did it use to matter?

Ok well that's all for now. Thanks in advance for your insight.

So long

It can matter for certain things, such as pre-specifiying a default directory for file dialogs. For instance, if you use an FTP client, and want to preset the start-in directory to always be the directory your website is stored in locally. Now, many FTP programs let you specify that anyways with connection settings info, but there are other ways it can be useful, especially if an app has no way itself of specifiying a particular startup folder. Or, if you make 10 shortcut to a single ".bat" file, say to copy or delete files, and you specify the startup folder differently for each one. For example, make a .bat file that deletes *.* in a directory, and then specify different directories in the startup icons, so you have a quick button to delete your Temp directory, or your "bible music" downloads directory, etc.

Ja, it was a much more important function in Windows 3.x
