Floppy Disk problems in WinXP

edited March 2005 in Hardware
I'm experiencing problems with full functionality of my Floppy Disk drive. Everytime Windows XP starts about 30 seconds after initialising the floppy drive seeks a disk, but no error comes up. The Floppy Disk icon doesn't appear under My Computer or Windows Explorer, meaning I cannot us the A: to drag and drop or simply open a floppy disk to view its contents. The only way around it so far is to do Start, Run then A: Enter, which brings up a folder window with the A:

There must be a way to correct this, I have tried everything imaginable to me. Checked Windows XP website troubleshooting, however there isn't an option in the registry to remove/amend the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters settings. I've made sure anything mentioning floppy disk/a: is enabled in my system bios.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Try booting in Safe Mode and uninstalling the floppy drive and the floppy disk controller. Reboot and allow Windows to find them again.

    Disk Management Lists C: (Disk0) D: (Disk1) F: (CD-ROM 0) and E: (CD-ROM 1) , doesn't list the A: Floppy anywhere.

Do you have TweakUI installed on your computer? In the "My Computer" section, under the "Drives" area you can have Windows hide drive letters. Make sure there is a check by A:

I don't knowingly have TweakUI installed, it doesn't appear in Control Panel or any folders...

The window becomes My Computer but a: isn't there

Try Downloading TweakUI, install it and check the stuff I mentioned in Post #8. Even if it doesn't help, TweakUI is a handy program to have. It was created by the developers of WinXP.

Yes that's done the trick! A: wasn't checked for some reason. Thanks a lot.
