DFI754 and VX ram?

edited March 2005 in Hardware
I just ordered the DFI socket 754 mobo along with a 3000+ DTR mobile proc and a gig of VX to play with. Does anyone know if anybody has run the DFI 754/VX combo yet and what kind of experiences they have had with it?

    Hi buddy :)

    Should work very well actually.
BH5 settings or close to it should work great. I'll look with the office if they can set up a similar combo for you. Make sure you have either a booster or a beefy 3.3V line on the psu. The modded bioses with up to 4V vdimm only works if you have a 3.3 line that is +.3 above the wanted vdimm. Which S754 is it btw? The UT right? Not the m-atx?

    Yeah, the UT version.

As for the psu, I presently have an Antec SL450 in the box I plan to install it in. But I also have a TrueControl 550 I can swap out with another rig so I can adjust the 3.3 rail upwards, if you think that's the way to go with this board. I didn't know that the UT board pulled it's vdimm from the 3.3 rail; I assumed it pulled it off the 5v rail like the nf4 boards they just released. This was more of an impulse buy than anything; I really didn't do too much research on the mobo besides finding that it's supposed to be around the best overclocking s754 mobo, and the A64 3000+ DTR proc was pretty cheap ($135 at the egg). I thought about ordering a booster yesterday too but I figured it wouldn't be needed. So much for trying to think. :banghead: :wtf:

BTW, when I get it in and get everything installed, I'll be looking for some good modded bios's for it.

The S754 pulls it from the 3.3, so if you plan on using the betabios, make sure to have +.35 volts above wanted vdimm on the 3.3 line. The S939 takes the vdimm of both the 3.3 and 5V actually. Not at the same time though :)

So if I want to use 3.3v vdimm, then I need to have at least 3.65v on the 3.3 rail, right? I was just checking online on the TC550's specs and it allows a max of 5% above and below, which will limit me to a max of 3.1v on the ram. I might just go ahead and order a ddr booster today then so I can get more volts. Are there any problems with running the ddr booster on the UT board, Mack?

well, you COULD run into spaceproblems with the booster since it might be a tight fit.
But you can always mod the booster so it fits better.
You can also do a dirty-punk on the board and take 3.3 straight from the rail to the vdimm and you'll have a steady 3.3 vdimm.

I think I'll pass on the mobo mods, but I will mod the ddr booster if I have to. I just ordered one from svc, since they say they have them in stock and have a reasonable price on it too. I assume that there are some clearance problems with the ddr booster on some boards then?

Yes, with some boards there are clearance problems since you have to use it in soecific slots in some boards. But most pf the popular boardss works, not any Epox though.

BTW, is there any specific slot to use it in on the DFI board? I checked the compatibility page and the board isn't listed for the ddr booster that I saw.

I used mine in the slot furthest away or the one closest to the cpu. The reason it isn't on the list is cause it have bioses with up to 4V so the booster isn't really needed
