BitTorrent Vers 4 Released

edited March 2005 in Science & Tech
After sitting at a stable release of 3.4.2 since last spring, Bram Cohen's official BitTorrent client has been upgraded to version 4.
4.0.0 is now available.
Changes since the last stable release:
All new queue-based user interface
Many options are now modifiable from the interface, including upload rate
Lots of other interface improvements
Extra stats are visible, for those who like it
Remembers what it was doing across restarts
New .torrent maker "btmaketorrentgui" replaces "btcompletedir"
Better performance, as always
License has changed to the BitTorrent Open Source License
Torrent fields are correctly created and interpreted as utf8
Too many little things to list
A few technical notes, for those interested:
Single port: launchmany can seed and client can download many files from a single port and thread
Interface now uses GTK instead of wxWidgets
BitTorrent packets are marked as bulk data to make traffic shaping easier

It almost seems a little to late as most 'decent' bittorrent sites are now shut down or gone into hiding :(

bittorrent is uses for all sorts of things other than piracy dude. I use BT to get the latest Linux Builds, and many companies like Blizzard are starting to roll out patches using a BT-like system

Yes blizzard is using that transfer style and has been criticized, complained to, received threatening letters, etc.... Patching like that is CRAP. Pay for the bandwidth you cheapskates. I have a 6mb connection and get a patch at like 5-8K down and 100K up. SUCKS !!!

Bit torrent and the like is the most effecient virus/spyware/adware vector propagation system ever invented.

Actually, it seems BitTorrent is the least efficient virus/spyware/adware around. Think about it. You have to download torrents from people, but if you're smart, you only download ones on a big site. That have been checked. Plus you can see the files it contains.

Other forms of p2p, I agree. They're quite loaded with crap. I have never gotten a virus or anything negative on BitTorrent, though.

I agree for you or I or someone who knows a bit about web security. Trouble is most people are totally clueless and then torrent gets just as many as the others.

    I get 200+ KB/s on Blizzard's torrent-based patcher.

I think using torrents to distribute patches is a great idea... I remember it used to be a real pain to get HL patches cause fileplanet would be queued ridiculously but with a torrent system, more people = faster download.

i was just trying to make that point that just because everyone's favorite piracy sites are going down one by one, it doesn't mean that bittorrent doesn't have its uses and shouldn't continue being developed
