Norton Antivirus 2004, which Symantec announced Monday for release next month, will use product activation, an increasingly common technique to tie a copy of an application to a particular PC. Symantec plans to add activation to the rest of its consumer software line over the next year.

I wondered when they would do that. I have been installing the same copy of my NU2003 four or five times on the same machine (I re-install Windows often... just for fun) and I always get a year. Seemed like they would loose money. But now they too see the money loss and are correcting that.

Isn't the Beta Key usually invalidated when the Software goes GA?

It normally has an expiry date, like WindowsME beta was Aug 17th 2000 afaik.

I know Norton AV 5 (which I had used until just after getting started with Win2K) I'd always reinstall, thus get another free year. I figured Symantec MUST know people would do that, as they've been doing it for who knows how long, and anyone who installs the software more than once would figure it out without any thought.

At least NAV's price drops a ton after the first 6 or 7 months of release.

That didn't work for me even on 2003 as it seemed to give my software a unique key when I tried to use LiveUpdate, and even after formatting it knew how long I had left, like it was matching my software to a remote serial number.

    Thus it expired :(

I'm just saying that there was a key. Sure it prolly wont be the same for the final product.

...come up with a good licensing deal for people with multiple computers. If not, it'll probably be AVG for me...
