IE: "about:blank homepage and 'Only the best' popups" - gnosis

Hi all! Noobie here, this is my first post. I came across this forum while searching for a fix to my new popup problem and homepage hijacking. It's the same problem that this person had recently: http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28601

1) IE homepage keeps resetting to about:blank
2) Popups that are titled "Only the best"
3) Popups that are titled "Search: ______" (<--- my search terms appear in that blank) when I search from Google or my preferred search engine.

I have run AdAware and Spybot and all of the problems persist. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    Make sure when you run Adaware the refs. are up to date and such. Also for best results scan in safe mode.

    For you about:blank homepage problem try About:Buster. Its a program that generally can remove all the stuff leading towards this problem. You can get it at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html.

    Thanks for that program but it did not fix the homepage problem. Running Ad-Aware in Safe Mode did not fix anything either. I forgot to mention in the first post that I also get a popup "Search: ______" window whenever I search from Google or my preferred search engine. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated.

    You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
    1. Prepare CWShredder for use:
      • Download CWShredder.
      • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
      • Please do not do anything with it yet.
    2. Prepare AboutBuster for use:
      • Download AboutBuster.
      • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
      • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
      • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
      • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
      • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
      • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
    3. Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
      • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
      • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
      • Please do not do anything with it yet.
    Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    Click Start. Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

    Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

    Boot into Safe Mode:
    Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
    If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
    To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
    1. Run CWShredder:
      • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
      • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
      • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
      • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
    2. Remove the offending service:
      • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
      • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
    3. Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
      • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
      • Click OK at the directions prompt.
      • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
      • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
      • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
      • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
    4. Clean out temporary files:
      • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
      • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
      • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
      • Click "OK" to remove them.
      • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
    5. Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
    6. Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
      • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
      • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
      • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
      • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
      • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
      • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
      • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
      • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
      • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
      • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
      • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
    7. Prepare your reply:
      • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
      • Please post the AboutBuster log.
      • Please note any complications you had.

    Disk Cleanup is hanging, can't get past "Compress old files" and I didn't think HouseCall worked but 5 mins after I Ctrl-Alt-Deleted it (because it was hanging at scanning zero files) a new window appeared and said that "HouseCall has found and cleaned a malware.TROJ_AGENT.EL"

    Also, I tried manually deleting Temporary Internet Files, and that hangs too, but that's nothing new. It hangs often.

    After unzipping, a cwsserviceremove.reg file is created inside the folder. Double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg Answer ‘Yes’ when asked to have its contents added to the Registry.

    Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

    Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntwo.dll


    Now run CleanUp while in Safe mode and it should delete all of your temp files.


    Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

    Unsuccessful. My homepage is still hijacked and the popups still appear.

    Complication: When I went into HijackThis to fix some values, ntwo.dll didn't exist but rather it was ieii.dll instead, so I went ahead and checked the specified boxes with this mentioned file instead of ntwo.dll. The same thing happened for obuxq.dll. There was no such .dll file but rather fgjez.dll, so I checked the boxes with this .dll file instead.

    I have given you two HijackThis logfiles here upon first normal reboot following your instructed safe-mode cleaning. The first logfile is before opening IE, second one is after opening IE. You can see the new .dll files that this adware has created... again. Darn!

    FYI, I've recently started using Mozilla Firefox and this browser seems to be immune to both the hijacked homepage and all popups associated with this bug. Apparently this bug only likes IE.

    You should be aware that the file names can change on every reboot and every time you use IE. If you have Firefox I would recommend using it and not IE until we get you cleaned up.

    Please follow these steps to remove the HSA from your computer.

    Step 1
    Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
    Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.


    Step 2
    Download Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.


    Step 3
    Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.


    Step 4
    Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files.
    Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"


    Step 5
    Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

    Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


    Step 6
    Reboot to Safe Mode
    Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.


    Step 7
    Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.


    Step 9
    Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.


    Step 10
    Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin


    Step 11
    Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.


    Step 12
    Finally, do an online scan at one of the following sites. Let it remove any infected files found.

    Yes, your HSA infection is gone. Just a few things left that I would clean up.

    Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

    Wild Tangent
    Viewpoint Manager
    Viewpoint Media Player


    Delete these folders if they still exist.

    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
    C:\Program Files\WildTangent


    Aside from that your log looks clean to me.

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
