DELL power supply woes
So here'e my deal. I posted a thread a while ago about my computer not booting (press f1 to retry, press f2 for setup), but that fixed itself somehow. My fan on the power supply to my dell dimension 8100 (i know, dell=teh sux, but the insurance paid for a dell after my last one got fried by lightning) had been acting really funny. It would make a loud buzzing noise, and occasionally stop spinning. This time it stopped for good.
I heard what I thought was a temp. alarm (beep-beep-beep) (it turns out it was my palm pilot alarm), so I figured, no problem, I'll swap the fan out. Dell power supplies have proprietary pinouts, so I can't just get a new power supply. So I get the fan, plug it in, and plug the power supply with it all dissasembled to make sure the fan blows the right way. Bad idea (in retrospect). I guess something must have been touching metal that shouldnt have been, because a loud pop and some sparks later, I have a dead power supply (well I'm not sure if it's dead...I unplugged it before it could damage the rest of the system). A small green ceramic capacitor basically blew up (it is visibly damaged)
What I would like to know is, can I just get a new power supply (I saw one on sale for like 17 bucks) and rewire the pins so they match dell's idiotic proprietary system? If I can, this would save me a boatload of money from having to buy a new PS from dell.
