noobie question - registered memory?

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Hello everyone!
I'll apologize up front if this question seems stupid but I'm considering putting together a gaming rig for my son and I want to get it right the first time.
I'm probably going to go with an Athalon64 FX-55 939 pin cpu and a DFI Lanparty SLI-D mobo.
My question is what is the difference between unbuffered and registered memory? I've only ever had Intel cpu's before. I was told by a friend that I needed registered memory if I went with AMD but he could not explain why.
Can someone explain or give a link to an explaination?
Thanks! Duane

Registered memory is used in high-end workstations and servers with multiple processors because it has additional logic that ensures signal integrity on the longer (noisier) memory busses inherent to multiprocessor machines. Nearly all Socket940 (Opteron and early Athlon FX) processors require registered memory. All Socket939 and late-model Opteron (252's) processors can use unbuffered (normal) memory.

It's the same story on the Intel side: generally speaking most Xeon multiprocessor systems require registered memory.

du, are you going to run SLI?
Let us know how it goes.

Remember, you want good memory. Check out some of the articles on anandtech.com where they have run memory in the DFI mobo.
