Missing parts of websites, unable to log into mail... by Mollygizer

No pop-ups, no hints, no clues anything was wrong until I went to log into my mail (mail.nyu.edu) and it wouldn't do anything but reload the page. Then tried to log into home.nyu.edu -- and it told me my passowrd was incorrect without even giving the website time to think about it. I called our ITS, and when we decided it was something wrong with my computer and went to download Firefox, all of a sudden parts of the Firefox website were missing. No gree Download Now box. Went to Download.com -- no download buttons. It was incredible. I managed to get firefox off of my roommat'es computer and everything now shows up and logs in fine in it, but IE is still befuddled... and as the ITS guy said, I should try to figure it out before I turn on my computer one day and get a blue screen of death. I'm not even sure if it's adware, though... it's not popping anything up like it did when I had Home Search Assistent.

We already ran AdAware SE, AVG, SpyBot, and Winsock Fix XP.

I'm not seeing anything malicious in your log, but there are some programs running at startup that may cause conflicts with your system.

You have MS Antispyware running, which is far better than Spyware Doctor. You don't need both to run at startup, so fix this line with hijackthis.

Spyware Blaster does not need to run at startup to be effective. Just make sure you update it frequently and then close it. Fix this line.

Be careful of running AVG and Norton at the same time. They may cause your system to become unstable.


Delete temp files

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.
