Problem with new hard drive and more

I got myself a hitachi deskstar 160gb last week. Today I went to install XP on it and after the first reboot, I got OS not found. I tried again, same thing. I used the CD that came with it and it said somethng about some OSes not being able to detect drives greater than 137GB, but I created a 10GB partition for XP alone, and besides, the setup saw the drive. I figured I'd try a BIOS upgrade, but that doesn't work either. This is on an Asus A7N8X, 1.04 or 1.06. I tried two BIOSes and tried awdflash.exe on a floppy and the one you can run from the mobo itself, neither one works. They load up and get as far as letting me input the name of the BIOS file, but then freeze.

Another weird thing is that the drive shows as using CHS instead of LBA during boot up. What's the deal man?

Well after much fiddling around, I've got XP to finally start installing itself. Still don't know what the deal is with the BIOS though.

    IDE or SATA?

IDE. It wouldn't let me install XP on a 10GB partition, but it let me install on a partition spanning the entire drive. That sucks, but I'll live with it.
