Problem installing hard disk
I installed a new hard disk in my computer. I installed windows 98, and it worked fine. I was in the process of up grading to windows ME and it froze. After the freeze when I turn it on it says "Non-system disk or disk error"
When I try to boot with a boot disk and rerun setup it tells me my computer doesn't have a hard disk or it is not functioning properly or itrequires a specific driver. It is a Maxtor hard drive and I have run there Maxplast and PowerMax utilities and run into similar problems. Is there anything I can do or is there no hope?

That is assuming that there is nothing on the HD that you really need to save.
You can get a free copy of killdisk Here and all it does is write 0's to your hard drive.
Then just re-partition and format and re-install the OS.
Tmod
like there isn't even a hard drive
I replaced the old HDD and it runs just fine, will even go into BIOS.
How bad is this? Is the new drive toast or what?
drive is working
gets to 21% of installing windows and quits
tells me to look at "cab errors" in the help file but there is nothing on cab errors in the help file.
any suggestions?
If you are determined to stick with WinME and are only installing Win98 first because your version of ME is an upgrade version, try this:
Go to install ME on a freshly formatted or "zeroed-out" HD. It will proceed through the installation to a certain point, then tell you that it did not detect any qualifying OS on the drive. Remove the ME cdrom and insert (what I assume to be) your full version of Win98. Point the ME installation program to your cdrom drive. It will look at the Win98 disc, then tell you to reinsert the ME disc. After that you're on your way. This will eliminate any complications from trying to do two installs of different OS's.
I hope that's clear!?!?
