Problem installing hard disk

edited March 2005 in Hardware
I installed a new hard disk in my computer. I installed windows 98, and it worked fine. I was in the process of up grading to windows ME and it froze. After the freeze when I turn it on it says "Non-system disk or disk error"
When I try to boot with a boot disk and rerun setup it tells me my computer doesn't have a hard disk or it is not functioning properly or itrequires a specific driver. It is a Maxtor hard drive and I have run there Maxplast and PowerMax utilities and run into similar problems. Is there anything I can do or is there no hope?

What I have done in situations like yours is just erased the hard drive and then started over again.

That is assuming that there is nothing on the HD that you really need to save.

You can get a free copy of killdisk Here and all it does is write 0's to your hard drive.

Then just re-partition and format and re-install the OS.

disconnect your harddrive, and reconnect all the cables, and make sure it's all connected, and then go into your bios see if your bios recognizes the hdd. If it doesn't then you have problems.

That is another problem it wont go in to BIOS.
I replaced the old HDD and it runs just fine, will even go into BIOS.

How bad is this? Is the new drive toast or what?

It may be helpful to mention that WinME is not an upgrade to Win98. I know it was released later, but it in my opinion you would be far better off using Win98.

If you are determined to stick with WinME and are only installing Win98 first because your version of ME is an upgrade version, try this:

Go to install ME on a freshly formatted or "zeroed-out" HD. It will proceed through the installation to a certain point, then tell you that it did not detect any qualifying OS on the drive. Remove the ME cdrom and insert (what I assume to be) your full version of Win98. Point the ME installation program to your cdrom drive. It will look at the Win98 disc, then tell you to reinsert the ME disc. After that you're on your way. This will eliminate any complications from trying to do two installs of different OS's. :)

Actually, you can use any W95, W98, W98SE disk, full version OR upgrade version, as "evidence" for a Windoze upgrade disk to install. As Prof said, use the ME upgrade disk as a install disk with a freshly formatted hdd and it will eventually tell you that it can't find that qualifying version on of an OS on the hdd, you can take ANY prior version of Windows to continue.

    I hope that's clear!?!? ;D
