Net Send curiosity

Would anyone know why I am unable to net send someone accross the internet? I have tried and failed every attempt. Both computers (have tried with a few different friends) have windows xp. I know firewalls could be an issue, is there something in them that I should look for to allow us to net send each other? And could I have a problem because I am behind a router, and thus behind an artificial ip? Also, could an ISP or any other thing be getting in the way? I mostly want to use it with a few friends that never seem to get onto instant message who still have dial up.

If you're behind a router, you need to forward port 135 to your PC.

And check to see if your messenger service has not been disabled on either end:

Follow those instructions to check if it is on or off.
