i was wondering what would be the better buy and investment, socket 754 and with this i would get:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+, Socket 754, 1MB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - OEM
and
DFI "LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb" NVIDIA nForce3 250GB Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL

And with my socket 939 i would hope to get:

ASUS "A8V Deluxe" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL
and
AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache, Socket 939 Windows Compatible 64-bit Processor

I would really appreciate the input and if you have any other suggestions, like if i should get something different then i put out there...

thanks for time have a great day

I have the 754 3000+ had I known at the time that it would become the lower end setup, I would have waited till 939 came out(which at the time was like a month or two away).

I' go 939 since it'd be better in the long run from what I understand. Cuase right now if I want to upgrade my setup to a PCI-E I'd need a new motherboard and processor :( I know there are some 754 PCI-E boards out, but the really nice ones are for 939...

RWB called it right. 754 is a dead-end right now.

It works well enough performance-wise, but you probably won't be able to upgrade the CPU down the road.

What else would you like to know? I don't know what type of budget your working with or if your going for a highend system or just something that works. We've basically already told you that socket 939 is better for the long run with upgrades and such being easier.

they dont make boards with AGP and PCI-E x16

well, ECS might, they make some weird stuff, but for the most part there arent any boards with both PCI-Ex16 and AGP

well they still make really nice boards with AGP, and they will make AGP cards for a long time, and AGP cards are plentiful, depending on you video card,i would buy a mobo, a processor, and a videocard or some ram, it all kinda hinges on what you have now to work with

Wintec has 512mb sticks of ddr400 for $39 a pop, i use cheap ram in all my stuff and i havent had any problems, ( apacer, and a-data )

i would go for some ram
a nice 939 board with agp, pci-e is nice if u got the $$ for SLI ( connecting 2 video cards together ) agp boards are just fine, i sugest the:

    MSI Neo 2 platnium - $142
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-468&depa=0

    ASUS K8V Delux - $129
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-510&depa=0

I would go with the MSI, i <3 asus but DISPISE VIA, but thats just me lol :)

Procs, you want a processor with the "Winchester" core, they are the best out right now, if memory serves me right, and a 3000+ has alot more umph than a sempron

    AMD64 3000+ Winchester Retail - $149
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-501&depa=0

    AMD64 3200+ Winchester - $199
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-502&depa=0

others can help you out more with the selection of RAM, i like the cheap stuff :) and hey, you might be able to pull off a PCI-E x16 :)

I found this site with a discussion about XGP slots. If you click over to Post #24 on the second page of the thread there is a comment from Biostar's Tech Support:
Some AGP cards can work, the chipset was designed for PCI express video
cards, however to support the market that has a majority of the AGP
cards, they implemented what is called a XGP slot, it can support most
of the latest AGP cards, just not the older ones. Check with you video
card manufacturer to see if it can be used on a XGP slot.

    Thank You
    BMA Industrial, INC
    Biostar Distribution Center

The thread refers to a somewhat different model board than the one you're looking at, but I'd imagine the info concerning XGP would apply universally.

I'd be sure and do my homework on exactly the parts you intend to order, though. :)

is there anything coming out soon that would be in my benifit to wait for?

yeah there is always something down the road if you want to play the waiting game---that's how it is in the pc industry.

I would just go with the best that you can afford right now...i saw some article about how it doesn't pay to wait for "the next big thing" price/performance/time wise. It's basically a cost/benefit analysis on upgrading pc hardware.

    ahhh, here it is.... http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2334

not for the faint of heart. we're talking serious reading here. :wtf:
