Bwellen: application errors, about:blank, back-door.bdd

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

My problem started out with the about:blank homepage taking over my normal homepage. McAfee continually told me the Back-door.bdd had been detected and cleaned on various files. I then downloaded Ad Aware, Spybot, Spykiller and Microsoft AntiSpyware and the Windows XP Service Pack 2. Each of the spyware/virus programs detected infected files and registry keys and I had them deleted.

The McAfee back-door.bdd warnings occasionally occur, but not nearly as often. About:Blank still takes over my home page even after it seems to be fixed. The big problem I have now is everytime I try to go to control panel, windows explorer, or search from the start menu, I receive an Explorer.exe Application Error: The instruction at "0X0269F065" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be written. Click ok to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug the program. The number of the first instruction changes each time. When I click cancel, the Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger appears and says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. It then asks if I want to send a report to Microsoft.

The 3rd problem I am getting often is the Microsoft AntiSpyware problem keeps appearing and telling me that BHO- ntrh.dll is trying to access the internet but I have blocked them from accessing it through the MS AntiSpyware program.

I ran HiJackThis. I did not run this in Safe Mode. If I should have, please let me know.

Here is the log from HJT. I truly appreciate any assistance that can be provided. Thank you!

I would uninstall SpyKiller. It's a rogue program and if you have MS Antispyware already it's far better than Spykiller.

Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.
    http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

    Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [addps32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\addps32.exe

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

    C:\WINDOWS\javahc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ntrh.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\addps32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lkbdb.dll

Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

Run a full scan with Adaware.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

I am not able to get into My Computer to do the procedure to view hidden files. I've tried double clicking and right click-open, but I get that same Application error. Is there any other way to do this or will it work to try it in Safe Mode?

    Thanks for your help.

You don't necessarily have to go through My Computer.

Click Start -> Run -> (type)explorer and click OK.

That should open up Windows explorer and then follow the directions for showing hidden files.
  • edited March 2005
When I Click Start -> Run -> (type)explorer, I still receive an Explorer.exe Application Error: The instruction at "........" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be written. Click ok to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug the program.

Any other options for viewing hidden files?

    I appreciate your help!

Do you get this same error is safe mode?

Can you check to see if this file is present on your system and let me know?

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell.dll
  • edited March 2005
I did find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell.dll (SHELL.DLL was capitalized, I presume that doesn't matter). I also have shell32.dll if that means anything pertinent to this problem...

In Safe Mode, My Computer (and Control Panel and Windows Explorer) works as it should. I was able to go into Safe Mode and enable the viewing of hidden files. Will this carry through to Normal Mode and can I continue on with your previous instructions now?

    Thanks for your help.

You will need to delete the files in Safe Mode anyway so that will work fine. However it's very likely that the file names have changed as they are prone to doing so in reboots and using IE. Please post a new hijackthis log and we'll go through it again.

Here's the new HiJackThis log (done in Normal Mode). Hopefully I did this right. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to run a HiJackThis log in Normal or Safe Mode.

I didn't mention this in my first message, but I am also getting the "Only the Best" pop-up adds.

Please follow these steps to remove the HSA from your computer.

    Step 1
Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

    Step 2
Download Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.

    Step 3
Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

    Step 4
Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files.
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Step 5
    Download cwsserviceremove.zip:
    http://lineofire.geekstogo.com/cwsserviceremove.zip

After unzipping, a cwsserviceremove.reg file is created inside the folder. Double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg Answer ‘Yes’ when asked to have its contents added to the Registry.

    Step 6
    Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    Step 7
Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {436CC2D6-13C5-6564-C2F0-1E89CB49E703} - C:\WINDOWS\ntrh.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [javahc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\javahc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [addps32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\addps32.exe

and delete the following files if present(do not be concerned if some do not exist).

    C:\WINDOWS\javahc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ntrh.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\ziyqt.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\addps32.exe

    Step 8
Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

    Step 9
Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

    Step 10
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    Step 11
Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

    Step 12
Finally, do an online scan at one of the following sites. Let it remove any infected files found.
    http://housecall.antivirus.com
    or
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

    Hello,

I followed all of the steps in your post. Everything seems to be back to normal (I can even use Control Panel and Windows Explorer again) although the panda software scan still showed 3 infected files that were not able to be cleaned. The panda software scan log is at the end of this message.

    Here is the AboutBuster log:

I read the article from primesuspect about Defeating Spyware. I decided to check Task Manager to see how many processes I had going. Currently, I have only one Internet Explorer window open and nothing else, but Task Manager says I have 54 processes going on now.

First let me tell you that your HSA infection appears to be gone. Good job!

You do have a lot of processes running, but they are all legit. I will say that there's a lot of them that are unnecessary though. You can have Hijackthis remove these lines to prevent these programs from loading at startup.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDSentry] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [diagent] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Diagnostics\diagent.exe" startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DwlClient] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"

    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

For those files found by the Panda scan, you should find and manually delete these files.

    C:\WINDOWS\crrq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\apiqq32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntfs.exe

And since you are using an older version of Hijackthis I would like to see one more log with the current version, which you can download here.

    Side question 1:
I wasn't able to download the new HJT from the short-media website because it asked me to enter a code and I couldn't see one. Do I have some box checked or unchecked in Internet Options that is prevently me from seeing this? I found it elsewhere on the site and downloaded it.

    Side question 2:
We use this computer to pay credit cards, order merchandise, for ebay, etc. Do you think we should go through and change all of our passwords due to the spyware that was on our computer?

    Thanks so much!

Question 1 - More likely it's an issue with the site. I'll look into it.

Question 2 - Yes it would be a good idea to change your passwords. Not because of the spyware, but the viruses that Panda found and removed. One of them(Bugbear) can track your keystrokes and email that info out.

    Your log is clean.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

One last line I noticed in your log that you should fix with hijackthis.

After unzipping, a cwsserviceremove.reg file is created inside the folder. Double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg Answer ‘Yes’ when asked to have its contents added to the Registry.

I tried deleting "O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\crhi32.exe (file missing)" but HiJackThis wouldn't remove it. I tried the cwsserviceremove.reg option (I had it already downloaded from last week) and then ran a HJT log. It still shows up there. I did all of this in normal mode, if that matters.

    Am I doing something wrong?

Click start, Run, and type "services.msc" and hit enter

Find "Workstation Netlogon Service" and set it to "disabled".

Reboot into SAFE MODE, and try deleting that entry in HJT.

I disabled "Workstation Netlogon Service" as you instructed. However, "O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\crhi32.exe (file missing)" didn't show up in the HJT log in Safe Mode nor Normal Mode.
