AMD Intends To Close Process Gap At 65 nm

edited March 2005 in Science & Tech
AMD is making bold claims regarding its general lag behind rival Intel in CPU process technology.
Intel began production of 90 nm processors over a year ago, whereas AMD released its first 90 nm chips only a few months ago. Despite this 8-month gap in the previous process release, AMD is confident that the gap between 65 nm releases will be much smaller, on the order of a couple months. Both companies originally proposed 65 nm production in the fourth quarter of this year, with AMD scheduled a few months behind Intel; but now Intel has upped its release schedule, putting 65 nm production in the third quarter of this year, a full quarter ahead of AMD's planned release. On top of that, Intel has been showcasing its 65 nm products for months now, whereas AMD has not shown even a simple SRAM circuit printed on its 65 nm tech. This hardly spells disaster for AMD, as it was perfectly capable of competing with Intel's best even while a process generation behind for the majority of a year. This time, however, Intel is not pursuing the dead-ended netburst architecture, which means the few months of lag between Intel and AMD 65 nm process releases may allow Intel enough time to regain the performance and/or value crowns.
