no THANK YOU! I will be posting full instructions on how we can all have 5 p3 733mhz computers folding the hell out of proteins for really cheap.

I am of course talking about Xboxs running linux and folding their asses off. This is an awesome alternative to a bunch of PCs emptying your wallet when the electric bill comes. Each Xbox has a 120 watt PSU. Take them apart, put them in a custom made case with the DVD-roms removed and you have yourself a lean mean folding machine.

You may say, 'well that only totals 3.6 ghz of computing power'. If you said that then you would be wrong. Linux is a very efficient operating system when it comes to code. Windows is heavily weighted with all its services and processes that run needlessly and consume CPU cycles. This makes it so you are not getting the most from your Folder. Linux running Xboxs with their good FSB should do great when they run ONLY F@h. In theory 5 Xboxes should be equivalent to 4.3 ghz of Windows computing power. How would like to be responsible for 6.5 percent of Short-medias power in Ghz. I know I would.

I am happy i joined your awesome team. I am sure I will rely on you guys for questions in the near future.

I forgot to mentioned I factored in my main PC, my GFs laptop, and 3 other PCs on friends machines to account for the estimated 6.5% total. You guys prob think i stoooopid.

errr, nice to me is 3.6 ghz lga775, 2gb dual channel ram, raid 0 config 500gb, Dual 6800 Ultra Sli Video cards, 600watt PSU, vento 3600 case. Havn't een mentioned any cd-drives or sound card, and I am up to $2000.

If youre not spoiled like me then yes, there are good PCs for less. ;)

I would mind that setup except for switching out the P4 with an A64 and a stacker case.

    nope no relation.

    Kingfish,
What kind of setup do you have? How are you crunching so many WUs? Are you an IT guy? BF DC rulez! Havn't played in 2 weeks, finally got over my withdrawls. Used to play Desert Combat ALL the time for 2 years it was my only game. Can't beleive Kingfish from DC is also Kingfish from Short-media, thats awesome.

Does anyone have a broken Xbox I could buy off them?

I moved into an IT position about 7 months ago and after helping them out of a few jams that they couldn't figure out I timed it right to ask the powers that be to fold and got it. I had to ask my immediate supervisor a few times (didn't want to run the issue into the ground) and drop hints here and there before I got it but finally won the approval. I run it on a multitude of machines at the "office". I've been helping the city (City of Lake Charles, LA) IT staff with more and more problems and have been coming in contact with many more machines that are owned by the city that I can [legally] borg. Shhh, don't tell csimon ;D .

I play BF DC all the time. I'm usually on the DCBB (Desert Combat Band of Brothers) server that plays El Alamein all the time (and on teamspeak). I'm a tanker kind of guy and have gotten quite skilled with the T72 but can play most any role. I used to be with the O-Company clan until it disbanded. I kept the sig because I like it and I still play DC quite frequently. If there's a particular server that you know is good, let me know (teamspeak preferred) and I'll drop by or drop by the DCBB server yourself. My nick is "KingFish" on DC. If you know of a good clan I think it's about time to find myself back into clan action and possibly even squadgames.

TNT El Al modded is pretty cool. Turbo buggies, extra planes. I am a self-proclaimed master of the Fragfoot. I love to kill ppl without guns or bombs, just swoop down and run them all over. RPG is my fav weapon, its like sniping with nades and u can get ppl around corners and stuff with splash damage.

I kinda figured it was an IT job thing. I used to work for a local college and was in charge of every PC and Mac there. Lets see now- average about 35 computers in 5 computer labs. I could of had 175 machines folding. Maybe I will get another IT job.
Been unemployed for like 5 years now, guess I should rejoin the work force. Wallet is getting light anyways.

How many machines do you guess you have working for you?
  • edited March 2005
I'll have to check that out. I would kill myself in a heartbeat in a turbo buggy. The normally aspirated version is fast enough :p
I have about 100 computers, give or take. It's soon to increase but, shhh, don't tell csimon.

Actually the buggies are made to take more damage so they dont explode on the first bump u hit. Its cool to get them on a hill then press turbo and pass by planes and stuff. I love shooting them out of the sky with the fragfoot.

Thats a lot of computers! Quick question though, how come I have it on 3 different machines and it stills says I only have 1 active CPU?

Have all three turned in a completed WU yet? If not, just wait until they do. :)

I think so, but I'm not sure. They should have since they have been running non-stop for 3 days.

My main computer alone has done 3 units in that time.

Look for the F@H log in the folder where you have the program installed. It ought to tell you there.

How fast are the machines in question? Some WU's are quite large. I've got an Athlon 850 crunching a 241-pointer right now with an estimated total time of 70+ hours. When it ties into one of the 600-point WU's it takes over a week.

Heh, I always entered "win a free Xbox" contests so I could turn one into a folding rig. Never won though :(. If only I could get my PS2 to fold (with all 128 bits).

Welcome to the team, and best of luck in recruiting Xboxes for the cause! :fold:
