If you need a challenge that is !!!

Thing has a huge amount of potential, but right now it is really a piece of crap and should not be sold. It corrupts large file transfers over about 400 Mb, Latest FW was supposed to fix it. Only fixed it on disk 1. 2 still corrupts. Disk 2 still doesn't post half the time. I have a Maxtor 80Gb USB2 and a WD 160Gb USB2 hooked up to it. Switching disk positions doesn't effect it either way.

You have to get a VERY GOOD network cable and put a core on it or it is so slow on transfers you wouldn't believe. It locks up often during long file reads like an backup image check.

You can download files from it on the internet, but can't upload to it when it is box stock.

The fun part is the slug as they call it is running linux. You can crack into the FW and run all kinds of fun things on it. ftp, ssh, web. Then it is fun when you can run your own web server on the power requirememtns of a home router :) A lot of people are setting up media streaming servers on it. I'm going for an ftp and ssh to start.

It really is a challenge to play with this little toy. Just wish it worked a little more stable.

    Okay an update.

Took the unit back to CompUSA and exchanged it for a different one.

Bought 2 3ft USB2 cables and a CAT6 3ft cable just to help in the "fix".

Hooked up the new one with the new cables and it seems to be clean on file transfers now. I have moved about 50GB of data and compared to original using beyond compare and no corruption now. Must have been a bad unit.

Hacked the FW on the unit. It's runnig SAMBA and uses linux EXT3 partitions.
Linked a swap file in off of the 160GB hard drive. Now its running Vsftpd, OpenSSH, Thttpd, Qmail, and busy box. It's slow on writes (~4-5MB/sec) but decent on reads.

Still working on the user Privileges, but I will get it woked out eventually. Now I have quite a handy little server running in a box the size of a router. Doesn't draw anymore power either.

I'm starting to have fun now ;D;D;D

That sounds like a nifty setup. How long do you think it'll be before the college crowd gets the whole dorm wired off one of these? :D

Everybody says they make awesome media servers. There are a lot of people using em to feed Itunes. They claim that is quite easy to setup too.

Info on hacking one is here : http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Unslung/NewUsersGuide

They have already compiled a lot of packages for it and you can just use ipkg to pull em directly to the unit. Only takes about 20 minutes to hack the FW on it since it takes almost 5 min to reboot each time.

and here's a web site running off the slug as they call it : http://www.bytered.com/

Not bad for a box not much bigger than a cigarette pack.

I'll keep playing with it for a while.
