OCZ vs. XMS

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Hey all, im ready to buy another 512mb stick of ram to add to my 512mb of GeIL ram. I have two contenders in the race, OCZ Extreme 512mb RAM, or Corsair XMS low latency 512mb ram. What do you guys think I should go for? has anyone got this type of ram? any problems i should know about?
thanks,
Dean

I personally would match what you already have.

Mixing RAM brands is a bad idea. Match what you have, or replace it.

why is it a bad idea?

The Serial Presence Detect (SPD) would probably be programmed differently if you mix different modules for dual channel. This is a really big problem on the A64's memorycontroller and isn't board specific. I would buy a new kit or at least 2 identical sticks if i where you. It would however be a very biased suggestion if i told you what to buy though :D J/K

What kind of money do you wanna spend? Do you overclock at all?

well, i want to overclock, but i havn't a clue, i've looked at tutorials but i dont want to stuff up my computer, i would rather a person who overclocks regulary does it for me...im in belgium now so im in euros, im willing to spend anything from 80-130 euros

Part of the reason behind overclocking is doing it yourself. It takes all the fun out of it having someone else do it. Plus, you won't know how to tweak it if something goes wrong. If you're going to be overclocking, then do it yourself. I'm sure anyone here would be willing to help out. Just post a thread with questions. It generally seems overwhelming at first, bu once you get into it, it's a lot of fun. :)

ok so ppl say i should get some of the same ram, what if i buy the same brand (GeIL) yet some low latency good stuff? will i get problems or whatever?

    Hi Dean,

Ideally, you should try to keep all DIMMs in your system identical. That way you can be assured of consistant performance and stability. From the looks of your signature, you are running on the Socket 754 platform, which uses a single memory channel. You *could* add another different stick, however if one stick is low latency, and the other is not, it will default to the higher timings of the two sticks, so essentially you purchased low latency memory for nothing. Some types of memory actually become unstable or do not function when their default low timings are increased (as strange as that may sound), so your best bet is to either sell what you have, and buy a proper 1GB dual channel kit (that will have a matched pair of 512MB sticks), or pick up another 512MB stick of the identical Geil that you have now..

If you decide to upgrade to the socket 939 or other dual channel memory platform down the road, you will likely not be able to run your two different DIMMs in dual channel configuration.
