Please help with Trojan Removal!!

Your time and help is greatly appreciated

My problems first started withe hijacking of my wallpaper...I would then get messages while surfing that I needed ad-aware protection..directing me to a particular site...

After downloading Sygate firewall and doing a scan it told me that I had

Trojan Port 5000 OPEN
Bubbel, Back Door Setup, Sockets de Troie

I found you guys through a google search...I've run Ad-Ware and Spy-Bot
and my HJT log looks like this

I do this for free, but the price you have to pay is listen a short lecture from me. You are running Windows XP that is dangerously behind on critical updates. You do not have any type of antivirus program running. I'm impressed that your computer is not more infected than it is. If you are going to surf the Internet today you must visit Windows Update on a regular basis and install critical updates. Otherwise you are leaving the door wide open for all sorts of nasty things to happen. There are several excellent antivirus programs that are freely available, so there is no excuse not have one.

Ok, end of lecture. Now, let's get you fixed up. :)

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service Host] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{97D5DF07-F37F-4B36-97AD-C63E92637011}\SVCHOST.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Local runole service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\srvc32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Local runole service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\srvc32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\srvc32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{97D5DF07-F37F-4B36-97AD-C63E92637011}\SVCHOST.EXE

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

Please download and install AVG antivirus. Follow the prompts to download and install all updates and then run a complete scan.

    http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg70free_300a419.exe

Let me know what AVG finds.

Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

If there are files that can not be removed by the scans please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

    AVG found 9 viruses infections(3 healed)...Java/ByteVerify

I'm running the other 2 now...
  • edited April 2005
The other online scans are not working for me...2 support only Internet Exporer and the second one says it cannot find where my plug-ins are for Netscape?

I'm currently using Mozilla...is there anything else I can use...

    Thanks again..

I approve of your decision to use Mozilla but you'll have to use Internet Explorer for those scans and also when you visit Windows Update, which you'll need to do later.

    BSam...

I keep getting the message that my Active Xcontrols prohibit me from doing anything..It's been this way for awhile(one of the reasons I switched to Mozilla a long time ago)

So, as is, I can't run the scans or updates from IE....

    Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure my IE is infected greatly...do I need to re-install it to run updates and the virus scans?

What are my options as far as just getting rid of everything on the computer/reinstalling everything?

    Thanks again..

Sorry for my late reply. I've been out of town for several days. Try the tool on this page to repair Internet Explorer.

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

See if that will get your IE working enough to run the virus scans. And please post a new hijackthis log.

I look at a format and reinstall as a last resort, but if you feel it's your best option let me know and I'll provide some more info for you to go that route.

    Download rkfiles.zip
    http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

    Reboot in Safe mode.

    Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

It's possible that an antivirus program might see the batch file running as suspicious activity and warn you. It's good that happened.

All logs appear to be clean!

    OPTIONAL FIXES
You can have Hijackthis fix these lines as well. None of these lines are malware, but just unnecessary programs that load up at startup and hog your computer's resources. This will make your computer load faster and run better, but if you notice something listed that you use often and want to load do not fix it with Hijackthis.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

    Sam..

I can't thank you enough for your help...

Couple ?'s for you....first my wallpaper is still hijacked..how can I fix this?
Also..it looks like my firewall is blocking Internet Explorer..is that possible?

Lastly....the message I got during my last rk files via AVG mentioned a trojan???

    Thanks again

Try this to restore your wallpaper.

Click "Start", "Settings", and then click "Control Panel".
    Open the "Display" applet.
Click on "Desktop", "Customise Display..." and "Web".
In the box under "Web pages" look for a checkbox named "Security". If found select it and click "Delete".

AVG may have seen rkfiles batch file as a virus because it was acting similar to a virus. It's nothing to worry about, it's not a trojan.

I'm not sure why your firewall would block IE. But you should be able to access that in your settings.

    Sam..

The wallpaper is now fixed....I changed the settings for IE and can now access it, the only problem, and the reason I switched in the first place is that I can't access websites that require a password..such as Hotmail

The page loads but after signing in, I get a message that it is "Not available"

Everything else though is rock solid..

    Thanks again

Follow these directions to repair IE.

    Sam..
Unfortunately both of those methods don't work..when I run the first one, a box comes up but disappears quickly..it never prompts me to do anything

On #2 I get a message "A file that is required to run search cannot be found..you may need to run set-up"

    Any other options?

    Thanks

"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly"

This is what I get when I visit Windows update...I've always had this problem
