How do the stats page work? I want to be in top 10 someday, but how can I? I am starting a diskless folding farm, and an Xbox folding farm. But if the points never refresh, will i have a chance? Does the page clear out once a month, then people start to fold and its like race with points? Or are us guys that came to the game late SOL? I just want to be a good folder, but I could never catch up. I dont know what? I searched the forums and cant find it.

    go here http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/

it keeps a running tally of all the folding you've ever done, ever. therefore, in order to catch up to people like csimon and kingfish, you're going to need a LOT of machines. good luck :D

    liquid.
we all started at the bottom just like you. I felt the same way as I'm sure most everyone else who's started folding for the team. Just take it in stride and be a consistent folder. Some day you'll have the opportunity to add to your name and your farm will grow. It just doesn't happen overnight. So don't be discouraged and fold away. Who knows ...you may even make it to 2nd place someday!!!:fold:

When I started I NEVER EVER thought I'd be anywhere near the top 10, much less make it all the way up to third place :D

Don't sweat it, it's amazing how quickly they add up

Its like swimming up a waterfall. But I will keep folding. Maybe I can make some kind of virus that automatically sets up a users computer to start folding for me. maybe then I would have a chance. How many years do you have ahead of me?

My GF is a professor at a univerisity. Maybe I can use her to get at the computer labs machines. I know some students too. Time to start being nice to my family and offer to clean their machines of spyware... and get them folding.

There's also something very important to take into account: point inflation.

I'm not sure how many people realize this, but point values on work units are ever-so-slowly increasing over time. Back 3 years ago, some work units were still fractions of a point. By slowly increasing the point total, you get to keep your old points, but they become less significant over time as point production climbs steadily. Hence, while 2 years ago a million points was almost unheard of, now people are reaching that milestone fairly regularly. 800 points (about what I do in a day now) for me is more than I used to get in a month! :)

That lets people who are doing a lot of work NOW pass people who've been doing an average amount of work for a couple years. It keeps everyone in the game

    All great points. :)

Your personal stats page is here.

The key thing is consistency and adding machines (ethically!) as you can. Everyone on the team has their ups and downs. The more you can keep your Folding rigs on the "up" side, the faster you'll rise in the standings.

As some of our Team 93 top guns have said, when you're starting out it can seem like you'll never get to the top. One thing that makes for great competition at all levels is trying to pass your teammates. You can check your User Overtake predictions and get an idea for how fast you're rising through the ranks.

You are ranked at 550th on the team as I write this. It looks like you'll be in the Top 500 by early next week. Just set some personal goals, like being in the Top 250 by a certain date. There is a User Future link where you can plug in any number of days (up to a year) and see where you're likely to be at that time. For example, it is predicted that 365 days from now you'll be ranked 168th - moving up nearly 400 places in the standings. Adding a few machines will get you there even quicker. :D

i have another question guys. On the PSU is it possible to splice the connector for the motherboard to power more than one mother board? Or is there a limit to how much juice will flow through thouse particular wires. For instance, you can piggy back the 4 pin power connecters as long as you dont exceed the 400 watt or whaever it is. I would be using this setup on identical motherboards, i could understand how different motherboards would not work.

    Liquid,
I have been folding for about 2 1/2 years.
    I started with a single TBird 900.
I have posed half of my points in the last 6 month and 80% in the last 11 months.

Work is worth more points now.
You get extra for the big work units.
The benchmark is on Intel machines, so running AMD really gives you an advantage as long as you can get Tinkers.

I am going to run amd from now on then. how do i get tinkers, and what are they?
  • GargGarg Purveyor of Lincoln Nightmares Icrontian

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but Tinkers aren't necessarily the best kind of work unit, they just happen to fold better on AMD than the do on Intel.

A Tinker is a type of core (cores process work units). There are some others, too (Gromacs, Amber). I don't keep up with points and WU type and all that, but lots of other people do, so I'm sure you'll have more info here shortly :D

I've been folding for about a year and three months now. I'll echo Gen Keebs sentiments about point inflation. I noticed it too when big work units began to appear on the scene en masse. It may be balanced by stronger processors out on the market compared to a year ago but it's really hard to gauge. I started with a folding farm much like you are now. Persistence is key too. You'll get up there faster than you think as folders come and go. Spyware removal on friends' computers in exchange for folding is quite fair too, just be ethical and upfront about it. I've used that quite a bit too.

It is very possible. The tricky part is making sure that all the hardware you use is of the low power consumption variety, otherwise you're going to have to buy an expensive high power PSU, in which case you may be no better off from a financial viewpoint than if you had bought two cheaper mid-range PSU's.

    Links galore here.

Splicing has been done a number of times. Guess with a good psu and 2 low power consuming computers it should be no problem.

Today's computers, like the Intel Prescott's and AMD 64's, need a lot more voltage than the old ones. Have a look inside an old 486, no fans. Look inside a new-ish one and lots of fans.

Have a read of this forum with links. Interesting info.

A folding farm can be a couple of desktops or notebooks. A folding farm can also be like BuiesCreek847 of the Folding Frogs built. Got to post number 7.

Lots of options and ideas to be found on the net.

I am in total awe of BC's folding farm. I want one like that. I just need about twice as many nodes as he has. Mine surprisingly looks a lot like his except his is neater and much taller than mine. I suppose it'll give me something to shoot for now. Totally awesome!

I think Ive been folding since Oct 2001. I was the 32nd person to join this team and have made it all the way up to 10th spot and have been as low as 110 or so.

Keep adding machines as you go. We do ask that you have permission as it is unethical to not ask and it can get you into trouble as well.

The wealth of knowledge here at SM is boundless. Ask away.:)

    mmonnin,
see, thats where you have the advantage. When you started, you had 31 spots to climb, I have 549!!!

I just want to make clear that I was kidding about installing without permission. I know I would be pissed if someone did that, and I am a true believer of the golden rule. :)

Thanks for the links dragon, they totally helped.
I'm sure I will be using the expertise on this site often.
