are you using the right/newest codec for the movie file? I usally run into this problem or the reverse (no picture/audio only) when im using another computer but ill just download the codec and it works fine. You say its an avi? What program are you using to watch it? Have you tried installing DivX and using their player? IS the little sound you hear just sound or the sound from the movie?

yeah, I'm pretty sure i have all the codec, i got k-lite code standard plus the ac3 filter, and I use gspot to check if all the codec was installed and it was. I"m using media player classic to run the file, 6.4.

Ac3Filter is extremely quiet by default. You'll have to adjust the gain of the codec in MPC to get the proper levels if your video indeed uses AC3.
