HardDrive clicks, computer slows, then freezes up

edited April 2005 in Hardware
In November of last year I bought a 250 gb Maxtor hardrive. The hard drive was working fine up until February.

One day i was playing the new Prince of Persia game and during the game I start to hear the harddrive make a noise. So I stop playing game and uninstalled it, hoping it would stop the noises, and it did for a while, but then the clicking sound came back. I would hear the click and then the HD would freeze up. As the weeks went on it started happening more frequently until one day I get home and turn on the computer, it goes to the loading screen, flashes the blue screen of death and restarts. I had to take out the 250 gb and use a spare drive I had with 120 gb. I started playing another new game Act of War direct action and everthing was going fine until one day I hear the same click from a different HD.

When I go to the event viewer I get this:

Source: Disk
Event ID: 51
Type: warning
Version: 5.2

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation.

Explanation
An input/output (I/O) request to a memory-mapped file failed and the operation was retried.

Running Windows xp with Service Pack 2
Intel Pentium 4 2.4gb Dual processor

i also have a 60 gb hard drive hooked up as a slave
Can anyone help me, thanx a lot

try going to Maxtors website and getting the hdd integrity checking utility, if the drive is making noises, its about a 99% chance that its about to die, back up all of your data !!!_NOW_!!!

Check the 12V on the psu im willing to bet that the psu is overvolting and the hdd is shuting down to save its self. If the 12V goes above 12.8V This happens on westren digital drives not sure when it happens on maxtors. But Ive had the same problem is one of my servers. Before I sold it I had started a log with asus probe and restarted hlds before the machine locked up and got a bsod then reset the voltage was 12.8V.I swaped the psu (@ power 430W with a antec 350W) It never happened again after that.
