HL2 Load Issue: Anti-Citizen One

Well, just as the title suggests, the game freezes (I think) when in part of the map. Where, specifically, I could not say. I'd say a good 30 minutes AFTER you get to command a squad of poor saps to lead to their death. Its on a staircase leading to what, I don't know. I let it sit and load for a good 25 minutes, and couldn't see anything because my screensaver loaded, and blacked the screen out on the mouse movement. The harddrive light was lit.

So wtf, I'd love to be able to beat this game within the next century. :(

well, we could start with the basics - memory test, chkdsk, etc.

Have you done any hardware diagnostics?

Do you have the steam version or the CD/DVD version of the game?

Memtest passed a month ago, can't imagine why it wouldn't again. By check disk you mean drive maitenance right? Like winXP's scandisk? I'll try it.

I have the CD version of the game (ugh 600 CD's :) )

What type of hardware diag's would be of use, I'm literally out of solutions that could help.

Edit: I've run chkdsk from Start>Run>chkdsk

I guess it passed, nothing came up as an error through the 3 stages and it closed when it was finished. I will run Half-Life 2's file verification or whatever now and see what it says.

Have you changed video drivers or anything recently?

Find out what level you are on by going into the console for example you will be on.

    d3_c17_01

just add 1 onto the end number using the map command so.

    map d3_c17_02

Bothered: No, but I was contemplating upgrading to the latest, just for the hell of it. I'll try that later.

Ben: Thanks for that, I was going to start looking up console commands to skip to that part of the level.

I really have no idea why this is happening. I'm about to try again but load from an earlier point in the game, see if it causes problems. This hasn't been the first time HL2 has gotten quirky on me, earlier when I was riding around on the hydroboat thing the map loading area failed to load, making me slam into a solid black wall wondering what was going on, and why it looked like I had clipping on. A restart fixed that issue, however.

It appears to be fixed after 2 days' worth of testing. After 2 game updates, a steam update, and running everything from virus scanning, to emptying java cache, to spybot and ad-aware, I think all I needed to do was backup 2-3 savegame files earlier and play from there.

Ah well, you win some you loose some, I'm just glad I can continue on. :D
