XP Won't install an External HD

I have an external HD hooked up, USB connection. According to the product description XP should see it no problem.

I can see it in device manager, but it has an exclamation point and when I try to install it, I get an invalid data error.

I use this on a 2000 laptop, no problem. But my XP PC won't let me get to it. What could be wrong?

    Can you see the drive in disk management?

    I can see "USB mass Storage Device" in Device manager. But it does get listed as a drive.

    I had this issue with a Lacie drive - I had formated it and managed it on one machine and assigned the drive letter D: to it - when I moved it to another XP system it already had a drive "D" so I went into the drive manager and told it to change the drive leter from D: to a letter that was free - now that is the letter the Lacie drive uses regardless of what system I put it on
