Dell Inc. remains open to using computer chips from AMD as an alternative to those of its current sole supplier, Intel Corp., but customers would have to demand it, the chief executive of the No. 1 personal computer maker said on Thursday.

The changes would drive up initial production costs, meaning that Dell would only turn to AMD if customers demanded it start using AMD chips and not just Intel's

"I used to purchase dell 1U poweredge servers for my datacenter, but now
we buy whitebox opteron servers due to the variety of ways in which the
AMD Opteron is superior to Intel's server offerings. I just thought I'd
mention that the offering of AMD Opteron processors in your 1U and 2U
servers would reignite my interest in purchasing Dell, because I've
always enjoyed the other aspects of your products and service."
I have been recommending Dell systems to my users here at Fermilab due to contracts and service plans. However, due to the lack of AMD processors, I have been steering the same people away from Dell for their personal use due to the fact that you do not offer AMD processors. AMD has proven to be better performers in just about every benchmark. To top that, the average customer can save 50% on a processor of equal power (not MHz). The stigma must end. AMD is the only mainstream 64 bit CPU that is intended for general use. Intel???
My personal laptop is not a Dell (a Compaq) for two reasons... 1) Dell prices, even with a 10% discount, are higher than what I wanted for a laptop that was under powered. 2) Dell offered no 64 bit CPU.... I bought a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with NVIDIA GeForce 4 440, Wireless 802.11 b/g, CDRW, 512 MB Ram... all for less than $1400.
Please bring AMD to Dell.
Yeah, right... that really got forwarded to management...
