Google Seaches get redirected to specific site

I suspect I have a problem with the Winlogon Notify line or
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\iranmr.exe

I don't know what the two lines do, but I can't successfully delete either of them. I have run Adaware and also removed Trojan.alwayup with Norton ANtiVirus.
I also cleaned up lmhosts file with lspfix.eve but I can't get rid of the browser redirects for Google. If I do a search for cars on google, I see the google results momentarily then I am redirected to a page featuring cars.

I am also gettilng all kinds of popups if I let the browser session stay open, so I must still have some type of trojan, even though Norton doesn't find anything else.
Thanks, Mike

    Download rkfiles.zip
    http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
    Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

    Reboot in Safe mode.

    Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
    It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
    Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

    Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

    I can see there are a few bad files there related to the qoologic trojan, but there are also a few I do not recognise. Can you upload the files to an online virus scanner, then post back the results of each one. We will then begin the cleanup process.

    Please go here and have these files scanned.

    Hopefully this will be it :).

    We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following:

    1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    hommqfppqh.exe*

    2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

    Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Config..."
    2. Click "Misc Tools"
    3. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system\hommqfppqh.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\iranmr.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: rdut.exe

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: App Paths - C:\WINDOWS\system32\r8p8li7u18.dll

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system\hommqfppqh.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iranmr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\r8p8li7u18.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\rdut.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

    -

    winlogon.exe is a legitimate system file.

    There is a VX2 entry there too.

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Looks like a Purity scan entry there too. Please do the following;

    Run the PurityScan uninstaller.

    Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

    From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Here are the outpits of lm2fix and a new Hijackthis scan.
    Thank you for all your help.
    Where can one learn how to do this? I am a computer professional and am really interested in learning. There must be a website that has info on what tools to use and when. I know it's not simple at the least. Are their any good books on this? Thanks again. Mike

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    Sorry for the delay, I couldn't get here yesterday.

    ===============

    There are a few sites where you can get training in how to interpret the logs and what tools to use with what.
    Malware removal, TomCoyote, SWI forums and I am sure there are more. You would need to PM one of the teachers there to request joining the classroom.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42 is one of the better tutorials online.

    ===============

    Here's a canned I will be posting for each finished log :D.

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the setup instructions.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Download Spywareblaster, from www.javacoolsoftware.com install and keep it updated to help keep your system clean.
    Once you have checked for updates, click the 'enable all protection' link.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others. Go here

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    This one too if Win2K or XP.
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    ===============

    If you're having any more problems, post back.

    Happy surfing,

    crunchie.
