Why does WMP9 pause at the end of a file?

I have Windows Media Player 9 and it works good, but it does something that bothers me.

I have it set to auto-repeat whatever it is playing.

When it plays an audio or video file for the first time that day, or for the first time since the computer was restarted, it will pause at the end for 3-5 seconds. Then it'll go into its auto-repeat and play it again. After the first time it doesn't pause at the end.

Why is this, and can it be fixed to eliminate the pause?

I don't really want to upgrade to WMP10.

I've always had the problem when your try to switch to another video on a playlist it will pause for a few seconds then play. I use the latest WMP whichever that is.

Windows Media Player does that for some reason. It has never bothered me, and it does it on certain types of files. It could be just reloading the codecs.
