where are you putting that 120mm fan? the case's description makes it sound like it comes with one...

you will need a heatsink and a fan for your CPU, and are you sure u can fit that in the case?? looks like there is only 1 place left on that case to fit a fan. and it looks like 80mm.

You will need that heatsink and fan, an optical drive (gotta load your OS with something), I might suggest a floppy drive for BIOS security, and I can only assume that you are going with the onboard sound for now. Assuming that you have an OS and keyboard/mouse/speakers/monitor, sounds like a solid system.

Well in the reviews on the case someone mentions that they got an extra 120mm for the front to blow on the hd's.

picked up NEC Black 16X DVD+/-R DVD Burner support Dual Layer, Model ND-3520A BK, OEM - $52

also could someone pick out a heatsink and a fan for my cpu because i dont know what im looking for there for about $100 or less. And yes im going with onboard sound because the reviews for it are pretty good and sound isnt that important to me. also going with the MX1000 it got good reviews here and a logitech elite keyboard. Logitech speakers aswell. Is there anything im missing? thanks for the help.

If you are looking for a deal on a decent looking heatsink, I found the Coolermaster Hyper 6 heatsink over at SVC for $27.99. They also have the Thermalright XP90 for around $30 and the retail XP90 kit w/92mm fan for $40 there at SVC. I have no actual hands-on experience with that Hyper 6, but it seems I've heard some good stuff about them. You can mount 2 quiet 80mm case fans on it in a push-pull arrangement and get good, quiet cooling.

The XP90 is supposed to be a great hsf too but I'm not that impressed with mine. I had bought it while they were on sale for a socket 754 system and I found the base finished well, but not perfectly flat. My temps were running in the low to mid 40's, so I took it off and installed an older Thermalright product on it; the SLK948-U, which is performing like a champ. The warped base on my XP90 might be a fluke though as I've bought many other Thermalright heatsinks in the past and all have been quality products.

    ok i decided upon
Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU Cooler For AMD Opteron and Athlon 64, Model "A1744" - RETAIL - $38 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-038&depa=0

also should i get some of this - Arctic Silver Premium High-Density Thermal Compound, Model "Ceramique", 2.5-gram( ~0.8 cc. ) tube $6.49 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-100-009&depa=0

I'm surprised no one has said anything about the VIA chipset or Asus board yet as neither has truely been cream of the crop for A64 so far. I would recomend NF-x chipset on DFI, Epox, MSI or at least a NF based Asus board.

You may want to wait a week or two for the new cores or get the "Clawhammer" version

Just my $ .02AMD Athlon 64 3500+ as they are better clockers w/ better memory controllers.

gonna use xp pro, $93 shipped full retail on eBay. cheapest i could find

Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU Cooler For AMD Opteron and Athlon 64, Model "A1744" - RETAIL - $38 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProdu...-106-038&depa=0

does this solve my heatsink/fan problem??
  • edited April 2005
DSizzle, I try to stay away from Newegg for my hsf purchases, because they rape you for a quality hsf. That Thermaltake Venus 12 hsf isn't even in the same league as the 3 that I mentioned and if you are dead set on it I bet you can find it cheaper than Newegg's prices at other decent vendor sites. SVC has the same hsf for $31.99. If you order from SVC, use the USPS priority shipping as it's cheaper and it gets to you in 3 days or so. SVC also has some decent prices on Zalman hsf's for A64 and they are also quality hsf's and quiet too.
  • edited April 2005
ok the XP90 retail kit looks nice, so if i buy that my heatsink/fan prob will be gone? :o

It seems that A64 boards are sort of up in the air as to chipsets. I have seen every point of view on just about every different manufacturer and basically, your milage may vary... Go with mudd's idea on that heatsink. I know it is easier to get everything from the same place but, save where you can. Also, if you do not plan on OCing this stuff, you really do have the choice of the lot on MOBOs. You might just look at some reviews and see what you think. UNfortunately, there has been no front runner for A64 for a great board (like the NF7-S for Socket A) but, just getting one will help you figure out what you do and don't like.

As long as you get everything we have discussed here, I don't see that you should have much trouble going forward.

DSizzle, that retail XP90 kit is just what I bought and runs very quiet. You shouldn't have any clearance problems with the XP90 either.

You also might give serious thought to going with that retail clawhammer 3500 that mtgoat linked to. Even though it's a .13 micron process proc instead of a .09 micron process proc like the winchester you are looking at, it's likely to overclock just as well or better than the winchester and has 512k more L2 cache. The .13 micron process A64's are mature technology, with the process thoroughly debugged and the winchester's seem to be very spotty in overclocking abilities so far, with some overclocking real well and others not too good. My socket 754 system, which has a mobile clawhammer 3000+ in it, overclocks way more stably than my winchester 3000+. If you can hold off a few more weeks and are bound and determined to go with a ,09 process A64, then hold out for a Venice or San Diego 3500+, which will be second generation ,09 A64 processors. They have an improved memory controller and also SSE3 instruction sets. The Venice is a 512k L2 cache proc and San Diego is a 1MB L2 cahe part.

BTW, my mobile clawhammer is presently at 2655 MHz and 1.6volts vcore and hasn"t topped out yet. Not bad at all for a $135 processor. :D My temps run in the mid 30's with this folding and at idle (which is very seldom) it's only a couple of degrees higher than the mobo system temp reading.

It looks great but I would change 2 things if possible.

Firs,t the power supply you listed is a very good one but I just got the SUPER FLOWER 550W PLUG-N 14CM MODULAR BTX POWER SUPPLY for my wife's rig and it simply put to shame her out going Antec True 430 and my current Antec True 550 12V EPS. The lines are more stable than my Antec with no real line fluctuation at all!

Second, the memory you picked will work OK but if your budget allows I would recomend better! Otherwise looks great!
